  • To compete in the 2013-14 Poetry Out Loud program, complete and submit this application (pages 1 & 2) by Nov. 8, 2013.
  • List all teachers and number of students in your school who will be participating.
  • Indicate if you would like the RI Poet Laureate and/or another Teaching Artist to visit your classroom. See Details Below
  • Indicate approximate dates you expect to teach poetry in your classroom(s).

  • TEACHING ARTIST INFO: Because of an anticipated increase in registration, we are not able to provide a Teaching Artist to every school, though we will do our best to honor as many requests as possible. Teaching Artists visit a school one time only, but may work with more than one class on that day. The RI State Poet Laureate will also be helping conduct school/class workshops.If you would like to request a teaching artist briefly describe why you would find this helpful. Consideration will be given to classes that included students with disabilities/IEPs, though this will not be the only determining factor considered.

POETRY OUT LOUD AGREEMENT

Expectations:

  • Incorporate poetry recitation into curriculum (at teacher’s discretion).
  • Hold school/classroom competition by February 14, 2014 to determine school champion and alternate.
  • Ensure school champion (or alternate) attends March 16, 2014 State Competition and National Competition April 29-30, 2014
  • Submit all required forms by indicated deadlines. (if selected)
  • Communicate effectively and in a timely manner with POL Coordinator.
  • Complete online teacher survey by April 15, 2014 (link to be provided following state competition).

VSA arts Rhode Island / Rhode Island State Council on the Arts Commitment:

  • Provide free curriculum materials to teachers, including teacher’s guide, CD and poetry anthologies (when available)*.
  • Present certificate of participation to each student who participates in the state competition.
  • Provide first runner-up with a $100 award and $200 to school for the purchase of poetry books.
  • Present traveling trophy to state winner to be displayed in their school for one year.
  • Provide state winner with a $200 award; a $500 stipend to school for the purchase of poetry books; and an all-expense paid trip (with adult chaperone) to Washington, DC, to compete in National POL Competition.
  • Provide state winner with free consultation services prior to National competition. (Dependent upon availability of funds.)
