Poetry and Media Assignment

Big Question How might media influence a poem’s meaning? (i.e. how might a visual representation or animation of a poem influence its meaning?)

Preliminary Class Work.

Analyze meaning and influence of media in regards to the following:

-  Walt Whitman and iPad air commercial

-  Rage against the Machine

-  A Song on the End of the World – Adbusters Video

-  A Tribe called Red – R.E.D.

-  Chaplin – The Great Dictator Speech

Individual Work

-  Choose a poem to analyze

-  Fill out the poem analysis sheet

-  Create a media work to convey this poem and its meaning

-  Reflect on how your media work contributed to the poem’s meaning

Rubric

Analysis answers are complete and state the meaning and significance of all important lines and words.
Answers demonstrate an understanding of the poem’s use of literary devices (e.g. metaphor, simile, repetition, allusion, etc.)
Student has made important and deep connections to the poem’s main idea and the world
Student has created a media work that effectively conveys or modifies in interesting ways the poem’s main idea
Student has effectively reflected upon the influence his or her media work has had on the poem’s meaning and outlined areas for improvement.

Poem Analysis Sheet

1. What is the main idea of the poem? (There could be many)

2. How does the poet convey this idea? (i.e. what literary devices does the author use to convey his or her meaning? How are explicit and implicit ideas conveyed?)

3. What is the significance of this poem for you, other readers and our world? What is the importance of the poem’s message?

4. How does your media piece influence the poem’s meaning? Why did you choose this form of media for this poem? What would you improve upon for the next time?
