Presidents Message.
Thank you for the honour of electing me President of this fine club. Your officers and committee are an exceptionally talented bunch this year. You should take every opportunity to talk to them and visit the clubrooms at the Stadium as often as possible.
Rugby sub-committee.
Your club captain, Hamish Vance, assisted by Mike Reedy, Mike Russell and D’Arcy Quinn, has already organised one outing against St Pat’s last month. The boys benefit from the coaching and guidance given by our members during these games. Other games are planned against HIBS and HVHS. In early September games against HawkesBay and Taranaki teams will be arranged. We hope to tap into the Hurricanes squad for some appearances in our colours. There is a possibility that we may run a secondary schools team.
Social and clubrooms.
Again John Burrows is in charge of the arrangements for the pre-test lunch at the Stadium on 8 June. He has had the tables in the clubrooms refurbished, and is trying to get the bar service up to scratch. So every reason to be there, especially before and after the super-14 and NPC games. Nigel Hughes has a particular role in the legal side of our clubroom arrangements with the Stadium.
Membership.
Bill Brien continues to do a great job looking after our finances (which are in good shape), and maintaining our membership. Please keep those nominations coming in.
Liaison.
We need to keep in touch with the WRFU, other local clubs, and kindred clubs all over New Zealand. Fortunately we have your immediate past president, Warren Allen and David Moloney available to do just that. Warren attends the Wellington Rugby Board meetings and David keeps in touch with kindred clubs. Warren also talks to William Strang who is the local clubs’ liaison officer. This year your vice president, Brendan Gard’ner, is looking after the annual golf day.
Communication.
We are pleased to have the services of Graham Stephen for this newsletter, and, more in future. Also, for our monthly meetings our secretary Brian Coomber keeps us on the straight and narrow, and is the man to talk to if you want anything done. Contact details of all the above are in this newsletter and you are urged to call on us if there is something you want to ask or say.
So…
enjoy your club this year which promises to be a very busy one, and get those table orders in to John Burrows for the lunch on 8 June.
Ross Crotty
President.
Club Captain Reports
The annual Centurions games against Wellington school First XV's began a little earlier this year with a match against St Pats Town on Wednesday 28 March.Although the Centurions players were another year older, the summer “re-conditioning programme” looked as though it was successful (until kick off anyway!). The game was played in great spirit with each side managing two tries. Therefore the unbeaten record continues, if only just. We were fortunate to have struck St Pats Town early in the season as these young guys looked well organised and well drilled. Their forwards were especially well drilled with some big hard running backs to complement them. Fortunately we had the services of Ross Kennedy and it was great for these young players to play against a current star. Ross, I am sure you will make “selection’ for future games…just keep up the training.
After the game the Centurions players took time out to do some coaching with particular attention given to kick offs and short side scrum moves.
The upcoming games are against HIBS (possibly 2 May) and HVHS with one other game to be confirmed. If any schools are interested in playing us please feel free to contact Hamish Vance on 0274 402 069 or Mike Russell on 0274 482 233.
