Change of Date: Annual Banquet 2017 – 1 Nov 17. Please note that Mansion House has had to change the date of the Shipwrights’ Annual Banquet 2017 which will now take place at Mansion House on Wed 1 Nov 17, not Mon 29 Oct 17. On current planning, the Lord Mayor will be present.

The Shipwrights’ Lectures. The Shipwrights’ Lectures were held on 19 Oct 16 and over 300 apprentices, students, employers, guests and Shipwrights attended. The event is extremely well received and only occurs as a result of the hard work and determination of a small working group consisting of Michael Derrick, Sarah Fraser, Alan Watson and Simon Crawford, ably supported by Paul Harris of the SA Scheme and Mr Neil Eccles, a one-time BBC Producer. Neil has very kindly produced the following flyer to advertise the 2017 event, but it will also give those who have not attended a good feel for the day: https://youtu.be/Ye8Uj971yUY Both of the Pendennis Apprentices who are featured in the video attended the Queen’s Silver Medal event at Kielder in September and the Southampton University Prize Winner, Kate Devereux received a cheque for £1,000 in addition to her certificate!

The Queen’s Silver Medal Interviews. Yesterday a panel from the Education and Charity Committee interviewed six very impressive candidates for the four prizes awarded annually in the Queen’s Silver Medal Competition.

·  The Queen’s Silver Medal and £1500.

·  The Bronze Medal and £1000.

·  The Derek Kimber Medal and £750

·  A Certificate and £500.

The six interviewees are listed below, but the results of the Competition will be not released until we are certain that all six of them have received their letters. Suffice to say that all of them are already winners having become finalists in what was an extremely hard fought competition:

·  Rebecca Avery - Pendennis Shipyard

·  Lewis Fedrick - Babcock International

·  Joshua McKnight - Pendennis Shipyard

·  Courtney Mitchell - RNLI

·  Olivia Richards-Smith - Sunseeker International

·  Struan Robertson - Babcock International

RONA Sailing Project. The E&C recently awarded a Grant to the RONA Sailing Project (formerly the Rona Trust – London Sailing Project), which is one of the oldest Sail Training organisations in the UK, having been established over 50 years ago. Rona ensure that their crews come from a wide variety of social backgrounds; from the well-adjusted to those in the care of Social and Probation Services, as well as those in between. In their 50 years, Rona have taken over 20,000 to sea! Phipps Cuff-Links. Many of you will know that the Company has benefitted greatly as a result of the Legacy of Freeman John Callender Phipps who died in May 2013. Part of the Phipps Legacy left to the Company is a very fine pair of gold chain and oval cufflinks, engraved with the Shipwright's Company Crest and JCP's initials (a photo is attached). The Court has considered a variety of options for the cuff links and has agreed to offer them for sale within the Company, with the proceeds going to the Shipwrights’ Charitable Fund. The sale will be by sealed bid and the Company has put a Reserve of £250 on the cufflinks. Any Shipwright wishing to purchase the cufflinks is requested to submit a sealed bid to the Clerk by Mon 23 Jan 17. Bids will be opened before the next Court Meeting on Thu 26 Jan 17 and the successful bidder will be informed thereafter.

Inter-Livery Swimathon. I now have a single volunteer for the 2017 Inter-Livery Swimathon which will take place on Thu 2 Mar 17 at RAC Epsom. The event, which is a fundraiser, not a competition, will begin at 5 pm and be followed by dinner at 8 pm at a projected cost of £50 per head. The idea is for teams of 5 or more to swim a total distance of 5,000 metres in the RAC Pool within the 2.5 hours allocated – 36 lengths of the RAC Pool for each member of a team of 5. The event is being organised by the Chartered Surveyors’ Company who hope that a proportion of any funds raised will be allocated to the Lord Mayor’s Appeal 2017. Any interested Shipwright should contact the office and indicate whether or not they wish to be the Company Captain / event organiser by Thu 12 Jan 17. Will the volunteer have to swim the whole 5 km himself??

City Livery Briefings. These briefings are aimed particularly at new Liverymen and Freemen and give a short introduction to the work of the Corporation, especially the relationship with the livery companies. The presentation is given by an Assistant Town Clerk and a member of the Livery Committee. There is opportunity to ask questions of the speakers and the Briefing is followed by a light finger buffet, which provides the chance to mix with other Liverymen and Freemen. http://www.liverycommitteecourses.org/city-briefings.php
