Fight Asthma Milwaukee Allies
Fight Asthma Milwaukee Alliesprovides linked and integrated services in places where children and their parents/caregivers learn about and manage asthma. These places include homes, childcare centers and schools, community centers and parishes, emergency departments, hospitals, clinics, and pharmacies.
Community Action Plan Highlights
In the Clinic:
Allergist Outreach Asthma Education for Primary Care Practices-nurse and allergist teams
instruct clinicians on improving the management of childhood asthma
Teach Asthma Management-clinic, school and parish nurses are taught to identify asthma
triggers and symptoms, recognize family concerns, improve teaching effectiveness and
promote patient self-confidence
In the Home:
Milwaukee Healthy Homes Demonstration Project-intervention families receive asthma
education, environmental testing, minor home repairs, integrated pest management, asthma
nurse case management, allergy testing, spirometry, bed covers and a HEPA vacuum cleaner
In the School:
Asthma Education in Milwaukee Schools-through interactive sessions, teaches staff in schools
about asthma care to help ensure safe and healthy environments for asthmatic children
Exercise and Asthma-physical educators, coaches, teachers and other staff learn how to
prevent and manage an asthma episode and when to seek medical attention
Awesome Asthma School Days-a half-day program for children that seeks to improve
understanding of self-management of asthma, as well as bring together community
stakeholders to address childhood asthma
In the Daycare:
Asthma Care at Childcare and Counting on You-child care providers are taught asthma basics
and how to create an asthma-friendly child care center
In Varied Settings:
Pharmacist’s Perspective on Asthma Management-offers updates of asthma management to
pharmacists
Catch Your Breath Survival Skills-a multi-media asthma education program for families and
children
Parent Mentor Program-trained parents counsel parents of children with asthma on how to
use resources more effectively and improve quality of life for asthmatic children
Around the Community:
Footsteps to Fitness-provides overweight children with asthma with tools and guidance to
establish healthy lifestyles
Parent and Neighborhood Organizing-community capacity building in the highest risk
neighborhoods in Milwaukee
Health Fairs and Asthma Wellness Days-in conjunction with community partners, raising
awareness and increasing knowledge with the general public
