All staff employed by the Electoral Registration Officer and/or Returning Officer must be impartial and must not have canvassed for, assisted or openly supported a candidate or an election campaign.

Deadline for applications

We encourage you to make your application as soon as possible.

We will not accept applications outside any deadline given. If you are selected for a role, Electoral Services maycontact you to check your availability before an appointment is finally made.

We monitor equalities data. If an Equalities MonitoringQuestionnaire is enclosed, please complete and return it.Any information provided will help the Electoral Services department to ensure equality in their recruitment processes. The data will be treated confidentially and will remain anonymous.

Jobs

Jobs will only be made available when there is a requirement to fill a casual post, for example during a canvass period or election.

Training

Training will be provided where necessary. Some duties may only require a short briefing session immediately prior to the task. Your letter of appointment will include details of the venue, date and time of your training. You will not be able to work if you have not attended a training session, regardless of your past experience in a given role.

Pay

It is not possible to set out the pay for each rolein advance. Rates for electoral registration canvassing and for elections staff are subject to change and vary according to the type of work available.

Some jobs are paid by a fixed rate (for example, polling station staff) and some jobs are paid by an hourly rate (postal vote openers/processors) or by piece rate (poll card deliverers / electoral registration canvassers). You may be required to work outside of normal working hours and onweekends and bank holidays.

More information about specific job roles can be found in the Job Description for each available post. If rates of pay are known at the time of advertisement, these will be provided or otherwise advised on appointment.
