Discovery Center Counselor in Training Program:

When school is out camp is in! Discovery Center offers STEAM-based camps year round.Camps wouldn’t be possible without the help of our Counselors in Training. As a camp Counselor in Training (CIT) you will be assisting counselors and educators with children in grades K-5. CITs will assist day camp counselors and educators in delivering age-appropriate activities and crafts and may assist Discovery Center education staff with programming focused on nature, animals, science, space, and superheroes.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist camp counselors with the delivery of age-appropriate lessons, activities, crafts, games, etc.
  • Arrive at 8:45 AM and be prepared to stay until 4:30 PM.
  • Assist camp counselors in creating and maintaining a positive environment that encourages active learning and fun for campers
  • Assist camp counselors in maintaining supplies and materials needed for crafts and activities
  • Assist in clean up
  • Other duties as assigned

Skills:

  • Must be able to work outside in summer weather for part of each day, walk on Discovery Center property including wetland hikes.
  • Enthusiasm and Energy
  • Work well with others
  • Must be able to stay in task and be on time
  • Must enjoy working with children
  • Follow directions from Discovery Center staff

Summer Camps

Superhero Science (4 day camp)

How do superheroes get so super?Assist campers and counselors conduct hands-on experiments to discover the science behind the powers of heroes and heroines like Spiderman, Storm, Captain America, Iron Man and Wonder Woman. The return of this favorite camp will feature the achievements of real life science heroes like Albert Einstein, Rachel Carson, Marie Curie, and Thomas Edison.

Amazing Anatomy

Have you ever wondered how your amazing body works? What adaptations do plants and animals need to survive in their unique habitats, and what does that look like up close? Dissection is the name of the game this week as we dig deep into discovering anatomy.

Star Quest

Step into our STARLAB to explore the solar system and constellations. Design, build and test your own stomp rocket launcher and rocket. Harness the power of the sun to create a solar oven. Learn circuitry to engineer a droid using motors and LED lighting. Campers will be able to dress up as their favorite Star Wars character and complete the Jedi training course.

Camp Catch ‘em All

What do Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle have in common with our animal friends at Discovery Center? This week combines zoology lessons with Pokemon-inspired science experiments.

Maker Madness

Join the maker movement to invent, make and tinker through guided activities. Marble roller coasters, wearable circuits, handmade paper, ceramics and birdhouse construction are just some of the hands-on projects campers will create.

Storybook Science (PreK Camp)

Leap into the science from some of our favorite stories! Each day camp will feature hands-on activities and lessons inspired by famous children’s storybooks.

Star Quest (PreK Camp)

Calling all astronauts, come explore the mysteries of space. Discover how astronauts get to space and how they live once they get there. Step into our STAR Lab to explore the solar system and constellations. Special programming will focus on solar science as we prepare for the total solar eclipse of 2017.
