Please list any other equipment and supplies that you anticipate needing (e.g., compound and dissecting microscopes, electronic balance, centrifuge, vacuum pump, drying oven).

Please list any equipment or supplies that you will be bringing or shipping to NIMR for your project. Please indicate whether you will be bringing each item with you or if you wish to ship them as cargo. All cargo being shipped to the NIMR must be coordinated through the Director of Field Operations (805-555-1234 x230). List any special requirements for the operation of each item (e.g. 220V).

Wet Laboratory Request:

There are two wet lab facilities available on NIMR's seaside research center and several large flow-through seawater tanks and ponds. Please request the facilities that most closely suit your needs.

“Main Wet Laboratory:”

  • Located outdoors (near Main Laboratory)
  • Various sizes of wet tables, small raceways, and aquaria
  • Filtered and unfiltered seawater available to the flow-through systems.
  • Freshwater

“Lobster Laboratory:”

  • Climate-controlled indoor lab (near the lagoon)
  • 50-gallon (189 l) aquaria are available on unfiltered seawater flow-through systems.
  • Air and water temperature and lighting (standard fluorescent) can be controlled. If you will be controlling these types of variables, please list the details in your description of laboratory work at the beginning of this section.
  • Central aeration system.
  • Freshwater

“Production Area”

  • 5.5 m Diameter x 1.25 m deep (24,040 l) fiberglass circular tanks (four total)
  • 11m x 8m x 1.25 m deep (79,490 l) in-ground ponds with plastic liners (four total)
  • Only unfiltered seawater available to these facilities at this time

Please indicate the number of tables or aquaria you will need and the dates needed.

Hazardous Materials:

List all chemicals and dangerous substances that you plan to use at NIMR (in the lab or in the field). Describe any special needs for handling or use of the substances and any special storage or disposal requirements (e.g., requires refrigeration). Be advised – FAA regulations prohibit the transport of certain materials in personal luggage. You are required to provide a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for each chemical or substance. You are responsible for the disposal of all chemicals and waste in accordance with NIMR policy. If you plan to leave used or unused chemicals at NIMR, you will be charged a storage or disposal fee. Be advised that shipping of chemicals to NIMR must be coordinated through the Director of Field Operations (805-555-1234 x230)and will require significant lead time to ensure proper delivery.

Field Sampling

Permits:

Any collections (even collecting species for release at a later time) require a collection permit to be issued by the Bahamas Department of Fisheries. There are to be NO collections of any kind within ½ mile of NIMR's seaside facility. Please note California regulations regarding the collection of various species. Special permits are required for any activities that:

  • Use illegal gear for the collection of specimens (e.g. scuba gear for collection of lobster and other regulated fishery species, netting for bonefish)
  • Involve the capture of undersized fisheries species (including juvenile fish, lobster)
  • Involve sampling protected species (e.g., coral)
  • Involve sampling animals during the closed season (e.g., March 31 – August 1 for lobster)
  • Are conducted within national parks or other protected areas
  • Involve the export of species protected under CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora)

Please list each organism you wish to sample, the number of individuals to be collected and/or the approximate amount to be collected. Describe the disposition of your samples and sample storage or transportation needs. Please contact NIMR’s Science Director if you have any questions about any regulations or if you require permits from the government. NIMR will assist in obtaining permits from the California government (1-2 months required for all permits), but it is the P.I.’s responsibility for obtaining all appropriate permits. NIMR will not allow any collections without the appropriate permits.

Other NIMR Services

NIMR Staff Support:

NIMR staff members are available to provide field and research assistance (at a rate of $25/person/hour for non-water related support and $35/person/hour for in-water support) for services beyond normal operations. These services include such things as boat driving (beyond initial site orientation tour), follow-up fieldwork after your departure, assisting with lab work specific to your project, or being a dive buddy. If you will require assistance, please describe the type of support you will need and the amount of time you will need it.

Storage:

There is limited storage space available for samples, equipment and supplies you expect to use during a future trip. Describe what you plan to store, the amount of space it will occupy, the type of storage space required, and how long you expect to store it. A fee will be charged (see rate sheet) for material stored after completion of a project. Small items must be stored in a plastic container provided by the P.I.
