Position Statement
Reporting to the Executive Director, the focus of this role is to develop and implement the organisation’s strategic communication, advocacy and fundraising initiatives. The role sits within the Executive Team, and manages a team of staff who are responsible for delivering internal and external communication, policy advocacy initiatives, and fundraising campaigns.
This activity is to be undertaken in a way that is consistent with:
  • the Constitution of YWCA Canberra
  • the decisions of the Board
the direction of the Executive Director of YWCA Canberra
  • the objectives and policies of YWCA Canberra, established by the Board
  • obligations and responsibilities as an affiliated local association of YWCA Australia
  • all relevant Commonwealth and Territory legislative requirements.

Responsibilities
Duties / The key responsibility of this role is to build and manage YWCA Canberra’s brand profile. This will be achieved by developing and implementing innovative strategic communication, advocacy and fundraising initiatives.
Specific duties include:
  • Developing and implementing communication, advocacy and fundraising strategies, including undertaking media relations, government relations, event oversight, campaign design, speechwriting, and a range of digital and print content and collateral.
  • Providing high level strategic communication advice and support to the Executive Director and Executive Management Team.
  • Developing and maintaining strategic partnerships and stakeholder relationships across all sectors.
  • Managing, motivating, and inspiring a team of communication, advocacy and fundraising professionals.
As part of the team, working together with directors, senior managers and other staff, the position will:
  • Generate and facilitate awareness of the YWCA Canberra’s profile, programs, strategies, and capabilities.
  • Contribute to the development of the YWCA’s strategic goals, programs and support processes.
  • Work collaboratively and consultatively in a dynamic environment ‘with and through’ senior managers, staff, as well as business/community partners and volunteers
  • Participate in the development, implementation and monitoring of annual budgets/worksheets and mid-year reviews across the organisation.
  • Prioritise and meet deadlines and work without direct supervision.

Selection Criteria
Qualifications / Tertiary qualifications in strategic communication, public relations, journalism, marketing, advertising, policy advocacy, or fundraising required.
Demonstrated experience in managing teams within a dynamic and fast-paced environment required.
Knowledge and Experience /
  • High level interpersonal and communication skills, and the ability to build relationships with a range of key stakeholders including staff at all levels, media, corporate and philanthropic partners, and government officials.
  • Demonstrated strong leadership and management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver outcomes with minimal supervision, and to exercise initiative and sound judgement in a complex and dynamic work environment.
  • Ability to be strategic, provide high level advice, and translate the strategic goals of an organisation into day-to-day operations.
  • Experience in writing for and managing a range of content platforms and publications including newsletters, annual reports, websites, media releases, social media content, grant and tender applications, partnership/sponsorship proposals, and speeches.
  • Highly developed project management skills including an ability to follow through tasks from conception to finalisation – including a ‘can do’ and results orientated attitude.
  • Interest in and commitment to social justice issues and an understanding of the purpose and values of the organisation.

  • Computer literacy
  • Current full driver’s license and access to vehicle with comprehensive insurance during working hours (if required)
  • A current Working with Vulnerable People Registration
  • Australian Citizenship or suitable rights to work in Australia
