Hello Families,

Please bookmark our class website-

Here you can find all of the spelling lists, the newsletters, sight word lists, website recommendations, and a lot more. It should be your go-to place to get info you might need to help your child with his/her school work.

August 31st - PTSA Barro's Pizza Night

September 5th - Labor Day - No School

September 9th - Progress Reports go home

Language Arts

In reading, we will focus on selecting "just right" books to ensure an appropriate level of challenge while reading. Small group daily reading instruction will continue to increase reading fluency. Please look for your child's DIBELS reading scores, which will come home by the end of the week.

Our read aloud of "The Bad Beginning" by Lemony Snicket will continue, with a focus on the sequence of story events and theme.

In our Wonders curriculum, students will learn to

  • ask and answer questions about a text
  • text sequence
  • compound words
  • subjects and predicates
  • inflectional endings (making a plural by dropping the y and adding ies)
  • narrative fiction.

Math

How to help your child:Find groups of objects, with an equal number of objects in each group, i.e. rows of Oreo cookies in a box, stacks of cups in a cabinet, paired socks waiting to be folded, etc.

Ask your child:

How many groups are there?

How many in each group?

How many all together?

What would that look like as a multiplication equation?

This week:

  • Solving problems with a tape diagram, skip counting, and the commutative property
  • Labeling and explaining the commutative property
  • Using an array to solve a multiplication problem
  • Using number bonds to solve word problems

Reading recommendation:

Try an author study with your child. It's really fun to read everything you can find by one author. Talk to your child about similarities and differences between all of the books, favorites, and the author's style.

TryMem Fox. She's an Australian author with quite the variety of books. Her picture books include vivid language, strong story lines, and amazing illustrations. Can your child extract additional meaning from the illustrations - in addition to what is given through the words?

Check her out on Amazon for some information, however her books are available at any public library.

Have a great week!
