Pre-requisites / Entry requirements to the Undergraduate Continuing Professional Development (UGCPD) framework.
Normally hold 120 level 5 credits or have successfully completed previous modules at level 6 or demonstrate the ability to study at this level.
Evidence of APL/AP(E)L
Health care professional working in an area related to plastic reconstructive surgery with normally one years post registration experience.
For students registered to the clinical pathway successful completion of Principles of Tissue Repair and Reconstruction – Level 6

Aims / To provide the student with the theoretical concepts that underpins the knowledge necessary for competent practice. Moreover provide enhanced skills in the care of this client group to promote evidence-based care.
Learning outcomes/objectives / On successful completion of the module the students will be able to:
  • Apply knowledge of normal and altered anatomy and physiology to Maxillofacial Practice.
  • Education of others in the management of patients with alteration of the airway.
  • Evaluate and explore the psychological effects of altered body image within this client group
  • Explore the contribution and involvement of the multi-professional team in all areas of treatment and care
  • Critically consider and evaluate the impact of head and neck cancer from diagnosis to cure/end of life
  • Explore and analyse the importance of the palliative care team and have developed skills in the breaking of bad news
  • Extend knowledge and understanding of diagnostic testing, and treatment options within the area of Maxillofacial treatment and surgery.
  • Appreciate and evaluate the impact of health education/promotion on this client group.
  • Demonstrate clinical proficiency through the assessment of clinical skills relating to the practice setting.

Content / The module content is reflected within both the classroom setting and clinical practice and acknowledges Government reports drives and initiatives and NICE guidelines recommending changes in evidence-based practice.
  • Evidence based practice to support the treatment and care of the patients within this clients group
  • Consider local and national protocols to promote good practice
  • Principle techniques in the treatment of malignant and non malignant disease of the head and neck
  • Treatment of facial anomalies and the support networks necessary for the ongoing care of this client group
  • Facial trauma and the treatment options available to aid recovery
  • Explore the concepts of reconstructive surgery and the impact of prosthetic devices to assist in the patients return to normal life
  • The role of the multi-professional team in immediate and long term treatment and rehabilitation
  • The role of the multi-professional team in the management of pain and nutrition
  • Health promotion, life style, and psychosocial aspects relevant to this patient group.

Teaching and learning strategies / A variety of strategies will be used to help students gain maximum learning from this module. While key lectures from specialist practitioners will be used to maximize the various treatment modalities, student- led seminars with case discussion, structured reading and experiential activities will also be adopted. These will promote further development and encourage students to reflect upon practice based issues encountered during practice placements.

Learning support / Each student will be allocated a personal tutor and will select a work-based mentor. The student will develop a learning contract that will assist in their personal development to gain the maximum learning outcomes from the module. This will enable the students to make links with the theoretical base of the module and establish the links within practice.

Written assignment 2500 words
Using a patient centred approach students will critically analyse
One aspect of care and/or treatment relevant to the module content relating theory to practice throughout.
Individual essay titles will be negotiated with the module
leader.

Clinical Practice

Assess the students ability to apply theory to practice
Students will be expected to complete Five clinical skills
during this module. Four Mandatory and One Optional.
NB. A pass must be achieved in each assessment part. Failure to achieve 40% at first attempt in any part will result in a referral for the module and a maximum final mark of 40%
Brief description of module content and/or aims (maximum 80 words) / The purpose of this module is to enhance the students’ perspective regarding the principle and theoretical concepts underpinning the specialism of Maxillofacial practice.
The module will focus on the knowledge and skill required to deliver effective clinical care in a variety of care settings.
There will be an emphasis on the role of the multi-professional team members and the collaboration involved in the successful management of this client group.
