The post is the Senior Data Analystand you’ll be in the Public Engagementdepartment.

This role will play a critical part in identifying and delivering opportunities for growth for Plan UK.

You will work with the Business & Marketing Analysis Manager to provide business insights through robust analysis of our supporter data and behaviours,and Plan’s public engagement activities, in order to inform short and long term strategies for maximising donor engagement and income.

Working closely with teams across Plan UK, particularly units in the Public Engagement department and in Management Information Systems, you will gather and input into reporting and analysis requirements, brief in data requests and use your extensive knowledge of statistical and analytical methodologies to provide robust interpretations and recommendationsaroundperformance, behaviours and trends.

This is anexciting opportunity to help shape Plan’s future by managing and interpreting complex data setsto identify learnings, gaps and trends that you translate into meaningfulinsights and recommendations that will influence the way Planworks and help build a better future for children around the world.

It’s a permanent contract at34.5 hours a week[we finish at 4.30pm on a Friday].

We are based in Old Street, London. (Finsgate, 5-7 Cranwood Street to be precise)

What we’re looking for

We are looking for an ambitious professional with strong experience in providing robust data analysis, including statistical regression modelling, to identify and forecast trends and learnings that will drive strategy and business insight. You will have proven experience both of managing analysis projects and delivering analysis yourself on marketing performance, and customer and behavioural data. You will be comfortable working with qualitative as well as quantitative data although your main strengths will lie in quantitative analysis.

You will need to be a strong communicator, comfortable working with diverse and senior audiences, translating complex data sets and statistical findings into meaningful, digestible insights for colleagues to apply in their own areas of work.

You will also be curious about the world and dissatisfied with the status quo. You will have proven experience in creative thinking, identifying growth opportunities and making change happen. You will be keen to learn, develop your skills and take on new challenges with no obvious answer. The successful candidate will have a unique opportunity to influence Plan’s strategy and ways of working, as well challenging what’s possible in the charity and marketing sectors.

What we offer you

The usual recruitment rate for this post (Grade 3) is £35,224 with future pay progression within the pay band from £35,224 to £37,078.

We have a generous annual leave entitlement which starts at 25 days (plus public holidays) for new starters.It goes up to 30 once you’ve been with us for 6 years.

Overview of Department
The Public Engagement department encompasses fundraising, major partnerships, campaigns, publications and digital media, media relations, public policy and advocacy. Its purpose is to raise funds and create a shift in public opinion on international children’s development and rights issues by mobilising the income, resources and forces that are needed to support Plan’s work. The department:
  • raises funds by engaging, securing and maintaining support from UK households, companies and other major partners
  • raises the profile and awareness of Plan’s work among key target audiences, inspiring their support
  • leverages Plan’s programme work through effective advocacy and campaigning
Its current audiences are supporters and potential supporters among UK households, UK businesses, the education sector and opinion formers on development policy, including UK Parliamentarians.
The role of the Business Improvement and Innovation Unit is to encourage and drive innovation and improvement across all Plan UK’s public engagement activities; to develop and drive new products, initiatives and opportunities; to help determine and co-ordinate the Public Engagement Department’s approach to new media and digital; to deliver market and competitive activity analysis and supporter insight; to ensure a supporter data strategy is in place to enable analysis of Plan UK supporter trends and business learning. The team also has a cross-organisational role, and the unit is required to support and encourage innovation and continual improvement across Plan UK.
Job Purpose
The overall purpose of the Senior Data Analyst is to identify and develop opportunities for growth for the Public Engagement Department through robust analysis of marketing performance, supporter data and behaviours.
Reporting to the Business & Marketing Analysis Manager, the core purpose of the Senior Data Analyst is to:
  • Provide business insights into supporter behaviour, consumption patterns and marketing performance by obtaining data, analysing it (initially using Excel but also using specialised tools where appropriate), topresent results to a variety of internal audiences using reporting and presentation tools
  • Formulate and perform mathematical modelling, statistical/quantitative analyses, predictive analytics and data investigationto support business decision-making, and marketing and product development
  • Work with Public Engagement units and the Management Information Systems teamto develop internal reportsto regularly measure performance, identifying key indicators and metrics that will allow you to draw meaningful inferences and make recommendations to support business decision-making, and marketing and product development
  • Develop internal audience segmentation, working with theBusiness & Marketing Analysis Manager to develop an audience development strategy; and communicate this information to staff to ensure the Public Engagement department applies audience insight and strategic direction to their planning, activities and supporter journeys
  • Lead projects, conduct strategic reviews and contribute to improving the quality of Plan’s data by carrying out data cleansing exercises, setting up data capture business rules and establishing marketing data frameworks in orderto enable and future-proof meaningful analyses. Instruct and advise internal teams on multivariate testing and test matrices to ensure data capture serves strategic objectives and that learnings are maximised
  • Identify opportunities for growing Plan’s business insight andcommission and project manageexternal analysis projects to this end
  • Be pro-active, flexible and adaptable, carrying out ad hoc duties as necessary

Key Duties / Key Activities
Provide robust analysis and recommendations to inform business decisions and strategy /
  • Work across Public Engagement to gather and document analysis requirements, ensuring business objectives are clear and agreed with stakeholders
  • Identify most appropriate methodologies for data investigation; and make recommendations for outsourcing / software purchase where necessary
  • Brief in data requests according to chosen methodologies and requirements
  • Interrogate complex data sets to draw inferences from and make recommendations
  • Translate findings into simple and compelling narratives to present back to audiences with recommendations, using engaging presentation and reporting techniques

Develop and deliver regular performance reporting, including interpretation of results, to supportbusiness decision-making, and marketing and product development /
  • Work across Public Engagement and at senior levels to gather and document performance reporting requirements, ensuring business objectives are clear and agreed with stakeholders
  • Evaluate business requirements against data possibilities to identify the most meaningful metrics/data sources to build reports around; recommending adaptation or cleansing of data as necessary
  • Specify report briefs and work closely with the Management Information Systems team to develop, test and approve new reports
  • Present reports, and train colleagues to use and interpret them accurately, providing on-going support to Public Engagement for report queries
  • Run reports at agreed times, and work closely with the Business & Marketing Analysis Manager to identify and track trends in performance data to support business decision-making and strategy
  • Provide verbal and written narrative to accompany reports, and the trends tracked through them,translating results and inferences into simple and compelling stories that stakeholders can digest and apply to their own areas of work

Provide insight into existing audiences and developa segmentation strategy to grow engagement and income /
  • Gather a detailed understanding of and document Plan UK’s existing audiences, product portfolio, touch points and communication plans
  • Work with the Marketing and Business Analyst Manager and theAudience Strategy & Innovation Executiveto identify and define distinct supporter groups/segments
  • Lead development of an internal audience segmentation based on demographic, behavioural, attitudinal and lifetime value data
  • Work with the Head of Business Improvement & Innovation and other Heads of Units within Public Engagement to develop an audience-led growth strategy
  • Ensure data protocols and business processes are in place to ensure the successful on-going tracking of segment performance
  • Analyse and report on segment performance at regular intervals, recommending adaptation of the segmentation model to continually drive maximum income and engagement growth

Implement and feed into a data strategy to grow analysis possibilities and business learning /
  • Assist the Marketing and Business Analyst Manager with and lead on complex CRM-adaptation projects to get the supporter database and other data sources ready for meaningful data mining and analysis
  • Conduct reviews and analysis to identify dirty data or gaps, recommending and carrying out cleansing exercises as necessary
  • Working with the Marketing and Business Analyst Manager identify , document and set up a framework for the consistent capture and ordering of supporter and marketing data, which will best serve agreed business insight objectives
  • Document business rules for data capture and provide training and on-going support to Public Engagement teams to promoteconsistent data entry
  • Work across Public Engagement to gather requirements, make recommendations, and establish an organisational-wide corporate coding structure that enableseffective tracking ofmarketing performance and ROI
  • Support the Marketing and Business Analyst manager to disseminate and embed the new corporate coding structure cross-organisationally

Provide analysis and insight support to the Public Engagement Department /
  • Work closely with and advise other units within Public Engagement so that they can continue to meet supporter needs and achieve growth through application of robust, meaningful analysis
  • Instruct and advise Public Engagement teams on how best to target audiences for campaign selection; and sign off data export and import briefs to ensure supporter opt-outs and preferences are honoured
  • Provide on-going support for Public Engagement units to meet their audience insight and performance measurement needs
  • Provide on-going support for Public Engagement units to meet their strategy, creative thinkingand campaign development needs
  • Commission, supply or manage data analysis projects to meet any of the objectives above
  • Liaise with international colleagues at Plan International Headquarters and other Plan National Offices to ensure Plan UKis aware of new data capture and reporting requirements from across the Plan Family
  • Conduct supporter analysis and benchmarking for Plan UK and the international organisation
