1. Course Description: Intro to Algebra is designed to prepare students to be successful in algebra and provides
students with the mathematical background necessary to progress through high school mathematics courses. This course is a first year math course for high school students and uses the integrated approach to teaching and learning mathematics. The course will cover topics ranging across Number Sense, Algebra, Space and Shape, Probability and Statistics.
Intro to Algebra meets PUHSD and Arizona’s College and Career Ready Standards for Mathematics.
Students will benefit from the study of Intro to Algebra in two distinct ways. First, students will learn and master the Common Core Mathematics Standards in Algebra and use the mathematical practices. Secondly, they will develop a foundation in mathematics that will prepare them for real-life situations such as work or citizenship. Intro to Algebra will also provide a conceptual basis for further study in mathematics.
Course Goals:
● Develop mathematical knowledge and skills in a way that encourages confidence and provides satisfaction and enjoyment.
● Develop an understanding of mathematical principles and an appreciation of mathematics as a logical and coherent subject.
● Acquire a range of mathematical skills, particularly those that will enable students to use applications of mathematics in the context of everyday situations and of other subjects they may be studying.
● Develop the ability to analyze problems logically, recognize when and how a situation may be represented mathematically, identify and interpret relevant factors and, where necessary, select an appropriate mathematical method to solve the problem.
● Use mathematics as a means of communication with emphasis on the use of clear expression.
● Acquire the mathematical background necessary for further study in this or related subjects.
2. Materials Required: Paper, graph paper, notebook/binder, pencils and erasers,
and scientific calculator
3. Grading System: The semester final exam will be 10% of your semester grade.
The remaining 90% will come from Quarter 1 and Quarter 2 each worth 45%.
Grading:
Test/Quizzes------70%
Assignments/Notebook/Participation------30%
Scale: A 90% - 100%
B 80% - 89%
C 70% - 79%
D 60% - 69%
F Under 60%
On the progress reports averages under 70% will be reported as being “in danger of failing”. More than 3 absences or tardies will show as affecting the grade. Students, parents, and guardians may retrieve student grades via district website at any time (Student Vue/Parent Vue). Students absent more than 12 days may lose credit.
4. Title I Program: Academic tutoring and test preparation is available to all students. Additional support for passing classes and graduating on time is the intent of these services. Support through Title I funding is available in the areas of: math, reading and English. If interested, please contact the Principal Mr. Biera or Assistant Principal for Instruction Dr. Gard for additional information at (602) 764-7502
5. Make-up Policy: Assignments are due as directed by the teacher and will be given 100% credit
if complete and done before the Unit exam. Late homework will be accepted up until the unit exam. After the unit exam late work can be turned in for 60% credit. All missed tests and quizzes must be made up.
6. Attendance: “Absent” is defined as nonattendance in an assigned class or activity for more than one-half of the period. (PUHSD Governing Board Policy J-1561 JHR)
“Tardy” is defined as not being in the assigned class or activity when the tardy bell has finished ringing. (PUHSD Governing Board Policy J-1561 JHR)
Students may fail the class for the semester in any course, when reaching a total of 12 excused/unexcused absences and after school-documented interventions have been exhausted. (Student Procedures Handbook page 22)
