Spark of Genius is an organisation that offers education, residential care, employability programmes and Housing Support to some of the most vulnerable children and young people throughout the UK.

With a staff complement of over 270, and operating in 18 sites throughout the central belt of Scotland, it is vitally important to our organisation that it’s Health and Safety processes are comprehensive and fully inclusive, verifiable and totally fit for purpose and that they ensure the continuing existence of a safe and welcoming environment for staff, residents, educational trainees and visitors.

Aim

The company intends to train a current senior manager to assume the role of H&S Manager, and for the interim period we wish to recruit (on a fixed term contract for approximately six months) a Health and Safety professional who can assume full responsibility on behalf of the company for this discipline. During this time, the temporary manager will be fully engaged in the assurance of all aspects of H&S compliance, and will give active leadership and assistance in the company attaining ISO H&S accreditation.

Following appointment the post holder will be required to carry out a comprehensive health and safety audit in each of the company's facilities and compare current practices against the ideal standard. The ensuing "gap analysis" report will be presented to the company Management Board" to gain formal approval for the introduction of the new health and safety practices which the H&S officer will be expected to implement with immediate effect

Other responsibilities

  • Ensure that all locations are adhering to Health & Safety processes in place. Track, record and file all Accident reports centrally ensuring RIDDOR guidelines and appropriate recording of information is being adhered to.
  • Check that all Spark of Genius H&S policies and procedures within each service are up to date, relevant, accurate and being adhered to by staff teams and ensure that regulatory information is being adhered to.
  • Advising the houses/centres on storage arrangements for paperwork and audit to ensure compliance.
  • Ensure that processes for internal and external H&S matters are being logged appropriately, dealt with and concluded satisfactorily.
  • Collate and report upon agreed key performance indicators to SMT.
  • Ensure that any suggestions made from regulatory bodies regarding the recording of Health and Safety information is effectively communicated throughout the company.
  • Communicate, assessand provide guidance on various documentation such as Serious Incidents and Holding Safely forms, fire safety recording, accident recording, maintenance logs and property repair requests etc. to ensure that all paperwork is consistent and being recorded properly.
  • Track and record information from original copies of safe hold and serious incident forms for central storage at Head Office.
  • Support the organisation in taking forward relevant new national initiatives and developments.

Essential Criteria / Desirable Criteria / Method of Assessment
Education Qualifications / NEBOSH Qualified (At least to Diploma Standard or equivalent. / Membership of a relevant professional body / Application form, certificate check
Experience & Knowledge / Significant experience in delivering superior H&S standards in a service sector.
Ability to perform Gap Analysis on current H&S systems and procedures, coupled with superior report writing skills to identify and assess the in/adequacy of current measures.
Implementation of short term “emergency” remedial action(s) if required.
Implementation of longer term systems and processes
Ability to play a significant role in assisting the company to gain ISO (H&S) accreditation
To assist with the mentoring and training of the upcoming H&S Manager who will be nominated by the business. / Experience of Policy and Procedure creation.
Understanding and knowledge of government initiatives, local needs and an interest in policy.
Working experience of delivering in a residential and/or educational setting
Good level of IT skills to include word, numeric and graphical presentation abilities.
Previous experience of dealing with H&S emergencies
Previous experience of assisting a company to gain ISO accreditation
Previous experience of continuity H&S planning and of “training one’s successor” / Application form, references and interview
