Pinewood Derby 2012

Official Rules

1.  Each car must be built from an official scout pinewood derby kit.

2.  The inspectors have the right to disqualify any cars.

3.  The car weight shall not exceed 5.0 ounces. The official race scale shall be considered final.

4.  The overall width of the car shall not exceed 2 ¾”.

5.  The car must have 1⅝” minimum clearance between the wheels.

6.  The overall height of the car shall not exceed 4½”.

7.  The car must have ⅜” clearance underneath the body.

8.  Axle notches in the body must be used. No one piece axles.

9.  Axles must be visible. Any car that has hidden axles will be disqualified for a trophy.

10.  The wood provided in the kit must be used. The block may be shaped any way that is desired.

11.  Wheel bearings, washers, magnets and bushings are prohibited. Wheels must retain the original width and may not be weighted, shaped, machined, or sanded any thinner than the original width. Only the rough edges may be removed from the outside diameter of the wheel. No hubcaps.

12.  The car must not run on any springs or spring like substance.

13.  Powdered graphite and teflon lube are the only lubricants allowed.

14.  No lubrication will be allowed once checked in.

15.  The axles supplied with the kit must be used. They may be polished or lubricated.

16.  The car must be freewheeling, with no starting devices.

17.  No loose material of any kind, such as lead shot, may be used.

18.  The car body may have no moving parts.

19.  If, during a race, a car leaves its lane and, in so doing, interferes with another racer then the heat is to be rerun, no more than (2) times.

20.  If, during a race, a car leaves the track without interfering with its opponent, it shall be considered to have ended its heat at that point.

21.  Races or heats will not be held up for repairs.

22.  If, during a race, no car reaches the finish line on the track, the car, which went the farthest in its lane, shall be declared as the heat winner.

23.  Once the cars are weighed in and inspected they are to be taken by the inspection committee and placed on display. Any cars handled or tampered with will be disqualified.

24.  Details such as the steering wheel, driver, decals, painting, and interior detail are permissible as long as these details do not exceed the maximum length, width, weight, or other requirements.

25.  Each car will be assign a number and affixed by the inspection committee.

26.  During the race the announcer will continue to give updates of who is racing and of other things that are happening. Please be respectful and keep the noise to a minimum so racers can hear.

27.  An adult must accompany scouts. The adults are also accountable for their children.

JUDGES AND/OR THE COMPUTER WILL BE THE FINAL DECISION.

Outlaw Rules

All above rules apply except:

1.  Wheel diameter cannot be smaller than 1⅛”, nor greater than 13/16”.

2.  Wheels must be plastic. All other modifications are allowed.

3.  Any style axles may be used.

4.  Any wheelbase configuration is allowed as long as the car meets the above dimensions.
