Piecing It-Together

Background

COTA Tasmania successfully applied for a City of Hobart, Creative Hobart Grant, in March 2017 to create a piece of art in Ryde St, North Hobart. The project is modelled on the successful Lata65 Project in Portugal which challenges stereotypes and ageism and engages older and younger people in street art. We hope that this is the first of many inter-generational streetscapes across Tasmania.

Who is COTA?

COTA Tasmania is the peak body for older Tasmanians. We are a small not for profit organisation advocating for better rights for people as we age. We host a number of free events every year and provide free information sessions to older people on a range of topics. We are part of a national body who believe that ageing in Australia is a time of possibility, opportunity and influence.

The Artists

We are really excited to have lead artist Jamin on board with us to make this happen. Jamin has a long and impressive resume; you can see examples of his art all around Hobart. He has also been involved in a string of projects for MONA including curating the past 3 Faux Mo Festivals. He will be supported by upcoming artist Josh Prouse.

How will the project work?

COTA staff will administer the project under the guidance of lead artist Jamin. Participants will be required for a total of six days; this will include 3 days to workshop ideas and create a concept for the wall and 3 days to apply the art. You don’t need to have any experience to be involved in this project, just a passion for art!

Time Frames

Participants will be required on the following dates – from Mon 22 Jan to Wed 24 Jan 2018 and from Wed 31 Jan to Fri 2 Feb 2018 from approximately 9am to 3pm each day with a possible 5pm finish on Wed 24 Jan and Fri 2 Feb (school holidays). In the case of bad weather we may need to swap days to the following week between Mon 5 and Wed 7 Feb.

The Art

Jamin and Josh have some great ideas but as a participant you will also get to have creative input into the project. Our brief is to transform part of the Ryde St wall (backing on to the Derwent Bowls Club) into a story-line about sport and leisure in the area using street art. This is a fantastic opportunity; you will be taught mural and stencil techniques and get the opportunity to work as part of a team with two amazing Tasmanian artists.

Want to get involved?

We will be recruiting around a dozen people for this project, NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY! To be involved you will need to be available over the six days and anyone over 18 will need a current Police Check and Working with Vulnerable People licence. Our staff will be happy to assist with application forms.
