The MPH in MCH Epidemiology is an interdisciplinary concentrationoffered by the Division of Community Health Sciences and the Division of Epidemiology and Biostatistics of SPH. Students may apply through either division. Regardless of division, the MPH in MCH Epidemiology concentrationis designed to provide students with a strong analytic foundation along with substantive knowledge of MCH programs, policies, and applied research.

Students in the MPH in MCH Epidemiology concentrationare required to take a program that combines courses in Epidemiology with courses in Maternal and Child Health along with courses from other disciplines that focus on the substantive, analytic, and technical aspects of the public health planning cycle.The student field experience and capstone project mustbe conducted at a state or local public health agency or be deemed relevant to the work of such agencies.

Overview of ConcentrationRequirements

A minimum of 51 semester hours (sh)of credit, including 3-5 shof field experience with a state or local health agency, a 1-3 sh capstone project, and 2-4 sh of electives.

*The Field Experience may be taken in a single semester or over several semesters for a total of 3-5sh (between 192 and 320 hours in the field, where one SH is equal to 64 contact hours.)

**CHS students may choose from two capstone product options. In each instance, the product must be accompanied by a written abstract. Option 1: (A) Poster or (B) Oral Presentation for 1 credit hour/ Option 2: (A) Poster or (B) Oral Presentation + (C) Paper for 3 credit hours. The capstone requirement for SPH is 1 credit; additional credits for the capstone are considered elective credits. For MCH students choosing the paper option, this should be prepared in a journal format.EPI Students must complete a formal oral presentation to division’s students and faculty.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT REQUIREMENTS

  • SPH Career and Professional Development Workshops: Each year the UIC SPH Student Affairs Office hosts career and professional development workshops and events. MCH-EPI MPH Students will be required to attend 3-4 workshops/events that are sponsored by career services during their academic careers.
  • SPH Career Services: Once a year each MCH-EPI MPH student is required to meet individually with a staff member from the SPH career services office to discuss career goals.
