MUCKROSS

CHURCH OF IRELAND Graveyard.

Contributed by John Cunningham

Muckross Church of Ireland. Muckross means “the peninsula of the pigs.” This church was built by the Lowry Family. One of the most famous persons buried here is Sidney Barton, 1876-1946. He took part in the Boxer Rebellion in China, compiled one of the first ever, English/Chinese Dictionaries and was in charge of the British Embassy in Ethopia when the country was captured by the Italians in 1935. He brought in Indian troops during the invasion and protected 2,000 refugees of 23 different nationalities. He was commended in Parliament for his actions which were described as, “being beyond praise.” He became sickened with the maneuvers of the allies, including England who he felt had conspired at this cynical invasion. He resigned and devoted himself to the affairs of the Ethopian Emperor Haile Selassie until he died in January 1946.
