Persuasion to Convince

The assignment for your group is to develop a three to four minute speech to convince.

You will not be required to deliver the speech, just craft an effective full sentence outline.

After your group has completed the assignment, a representative or representatives will share with the class the contents of the outline, and any decisions the group made while crafting the speech. Be prepared to defend your choices, and teach the class about the dimensions of speeches crafted for the purpose of persuasion to actuate. Draw upon resources such as the textbook, your colleagues, and any classroom material.

You will turn in a legible handwritten outline for each group at the end of the class period, with the names of all group members.

At times a persuader must deal with an audience that is undecided, indifferent, or opposed to a proposition.

Because speeches to convince appeal to the listener’s intelligence rather than emotions, they employ logical rather than psychological or personal appeals. They must rely on clear reasoning and carefully selected evidence in order to get listeners to respond satisfactorily. Six forms of supporting evidence –examples, explanation, statistics, testimony, comparison and contrast, and visual aids are effective supporting devices.

Delivery

Present your material objectively and fairly. An audience will react negatively to a speaker they perceive as being biased.

Suggestions:

·  Try to establish a common bond with your audience.

·  Try to show your listeners that your motives are sincere.

Some Sample Central Ideas (You can not use these, come up with one of your own):

·  The United States should adopt a system of socialized medicine

·  The U.S. government should prohibit the sale of handguns.

·  Our military budget should be reduced by one-third.
