Perspective City Drawing

Category / NP
(1 pts) / Basic
(2 pt) / Proficient
(3 pts) / Advanced
(4 pts)
The colored illustration is creative (if not your own credit was given to inspiration artist) and there are concepts of the drawing pyramid that were applied. (scored during studio time)
Studio grade color pencil was applied with many layers to create a smooth finish
Application of color (blending and mixing) and value (light and shadows) knowledge is apparent.
All requirements of Step 3 from the directions are present and rules of linear perspective are there.
The composition/work looks clean, neat, and presentable.
Extra Credit: Other types of perspective are deliberately drawn (circle all that apply:
Foreshortening, size variation, detailed vs. non-detailed, or varying color).

Perspective City

Lesson Objectives

Through this lesson you will:

·  Develop your observational drawing skills as you apply knowledge/steps from the drawing pyramid by illustrating a reference from online.

·  Draw a city in perspective and exemplifying space as an element of art.

Assignment Instructions

•  Step 1: Draw your “colored” illustration

–  Use gathered references to make your own creative illustration or modify a contemporary artist.

–  Start drawing lightly using graphite pencil on a small sheet of tracing paper

–  Draw your image according to the drawing pyramid notes

–  DO NOT ADD VALUE OR COLOR YET!

•  Step 2: City Foundation/Vanishing Point

–  Make a 1.5” border around the provided drawing board except for the bottom. The bottom should be 2.5 inches.

–  Lightly draw a vanishing point and draw out your roads. Be sure not to make your roads wider than half an inch.

–  Be sure to make the lines of your road parallel.

–  Only include ONE intersection.

–  TRANSFER your illustration onto your board and then erase any lines behind it after following the steps above.

•  Step 3: City

–  I will be looking for: a vanishing point; parallel lines for horizontal and vertical lines; orthogonal lines going in the direction of the vanishing point; parts of building becoming smaller as they go further back in space.

–  Draw your buildings near your vanishing point and then work your way out.

–  If you get close to your illustrated “colored” image do not make your linear perspective lines go into or through it.

–  Fill your paper with buildings and include the following:

·  All buildings have various sizes and heights

·  At least 25 buildings total

·  At least 10 buildings with more than four sides

·  At least 10 buildings with windows and doors

·  At least 5 buildings with ledges

·  At least 5 buildings with things drawn on top

–  Once you’ve finished, outline your city using a ruler and an ultra fine tip sharpie. DO NOT OUTLINE THE IMAGE YOU DREW ON TOP OF YOUR BUILDINGS.

•  Step 4: Color your illustration

–  Color the image drawn on top of your building using Prisma or Blick artist grade colored pencils.

–  Color in layers to create complexity and value.

–  Use colorless blender if you need to blend without changing the color.
