  • Basic general education to GCSE level or equivalent.
  • A qualification recognised by National Care Standards, e.g. QCF/NVQ Care or Promoting Independence level 2 or GNVQ Health and Social Care an advantage.
  • Minimum 24 months providing support to vulnerable adults, including at least one of the following groups: single homeless people, alcohol/drug users, people living with HIV/Aids, people with physical and learning disabilities and mental health problems. Either in a paid or voluntary capacity.
  • Previous experience of working in residential/supported housing setting.
  • Experience of working with residents to assess their needs, to promote individual choice, control and independence and to maximise people’s well being.
  • Experience of developing and managing support plans for residents.
  • Experience of working without direct supervision.

  • Ability to motivate and develop opportunities for residents both inside and outside of their home.
  • Good written communication skills for effective correspondence, completing forms and writing reports that are easily understood, clear and accurate.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills in order to interact appropriately with residents with a wide range of communications needs.
  • Ability to listen, gain understanding and co-operation and take appropriate action to meet residents needs within the boundaries of confidentiality.
  • Ability to work with high levels of distress and behavioural challenges whilst maintaining a clear and safe boundary.
