Day one: basic technique and landscape, finishing within 25 minutes. Perspective.
Day two: still life, people, and editing things in and out with focal point.
Day three: on location, plein air, using the technique fearlessly anywhere.

Interactive critiques and demonstrations are both given constantly in a very positive, personal atmosphere. Instruction is geared to the individual needs of each person so each achieves their goal.

This workshop is ideal for timid beginners who want to fearlessly paint in public, and perfect for experienced artists who want mobility, minimal equipment and no clean-up.

Using only a 4 x 6 inch art pad, a water soluble pen, a small paint set, a brush and a film canister of water, Pocket Sketching allows anyone to journal and sketch/paint wherever they are

capturing their “feel” of a place rather than simply taking a thousand pictures the way a camera does.

Benefits: Minimal equipment. Totally portable. A quick personal way of recording what’s immediately in front of you. Meditation. No fear of being “watched” because you’re in your personal space. Ease of carrying. Always ready. No clean-up. Easy to learn for absolute beginners and advanced artists. Use anywhere. Capture your impression: the thing that caught your eye in the first place. Perfect for travel, hiking, kayaking, standing in line.

History of Pocket Sketching Invented by Kath Macaulay

Started in about ’86 by accident on a painting trip as an offshoot to ‘wash drawing’, a difficult technique done with India ink. The India ink indelible line is drawn and immediately ‘run’ with water from a brush to obtain different values, or shades, to either side of the line. If you’re not quick enough, you get just a line drawing that can never be changed. If ink spills, it’s permanent, including on your beige leather upholstery.
I picked up a pen to write to a friend. The brush was always in my hand, by habit. I hit the line, also by habit, and it ran just like India ink. Until used with water, the line can be ‘run’ for years giving a complete value scale. Unlike India ink, it never spills. It not only makes a wash drawing, it mixes perfectly with watercolors, providing the ‘shade’ of almost every color.

Summary
As an artist, I enjoy capturing the moment. There is always a reason to paint something that catches the eye and the mind. Most of my paintings are designed to give the viewer a feeling of serenity, and of having visited the same location. As an instructor I delight in teaching my easy, totally portable, no-clean-up technique to beginners and professionals alike. For the beginner it is an open door to art and seeing the world with a new eye. For the advanced artist, it is a totally portable system for 10 to 25 minute sketches when standing in line, hiking, in a café, on horseback, anywhere. The workshops are well organized, fast, loaded with information. Motto: Learn enough to play for a lifetime!
