A Tour of ThyssenKrupp Elevator Facility

1.0 General

As a part of PEO Mississauga Chapter programs geared for their member’s professional development, a tour of the Elevator Manufacturing Company was organized for October 29, 2008 with Scarborough Chapter. A school bus was charted for this purpose to take interested Mississauga Chapter members to ThyssenKrupp Elevator (TKE) facility in Scarborough area. Scarborough Chapter members used their own vehicle to reach the elevator company’s facility. A total of 49 (21-Mississauga and 28-Scarborough) members from both the chapters participated in this activity.

2.0 About the Company

ThyssenKrupp Elevator is the largest elevator/escalator company in North America and is responsible for nearly 70% of all construction and 50% of all modernization business. Their service division services more than 170,000 elevators and escalators throughout North America. Their parent company ThyssenKrupp AG Elevator is among the world’s largest company with annual sales of US$55 Billion and employs 193,000 people in 70 countries.

3.0 About their Products/Services/Maintenance

A lively presentation was made by sales and engineering personnel on company’s products and services during this visit.

3.1 Products

ThyssenKrupp Elevator manufacturers four basic types of elevators:

  1. Oildraulic
  2. Traction
  3. Freight
  4. Machine Room-Less

Oildraulic Elevators are suited for buildings with seven or fewer floors. They meet the requirements of the American with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the safety requirements of the Safety Code for Elevators and Escalators (ASME A17.1). These type of elevators are supported and raised by a powerful hydraulic plunger, provides smooth operation, accurate floor leveling and quiet operation.

Their new AMEE series includes 3-stage Telescoping jack, which allows travel up to 20 feet higher than previous models. This AMEE design is a perfect solute ion to installation in areas where drilling a jack hole is difficult.

Traction Elevators: Whether geared or gearless, their traction elevators combine the latest digital technology and TKE manufacturing expertise to achieve a new level of precision, energy efficiency, safety and reliability. These types of elevators offer a variety of options in wall panels, ceilings, handrails, front panels, and metal finishes. For buildings with up to 27 floors TKE offers geared traction elevators for cost effectiveness. AC gearless elevators provide high speed service for any number of floors for capacities from 2500 to 4000 lbs. and speeds of 500 feet per minute and beyond.

They meet the requirements of the American with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the safety requirements of the Safety Code for Elevators and Escalators (ASME A17.1).

Freight Elevators: TKE manufacturers freight elevators in all sizes, capacities and finishes to handle every factory, warehouse and industrial job in the most economical and efficient manner possible.

3.2 Service/Maintenance

TKE Service/Maintenance personnel during presentation/tour of the plant showed and explained number of devices that are used for the protection and convenience of passengers. Some of the features are listed below:

  • Microlight
  • Vent slots
  • Emergency exists
  • Hoistway door keyway

Following emergency procedures were discussed during this tour:

  • Power failure
  • Emergency power operation
  • Battery lowering
  • Stalled elevator
  • Fire service

TKE provides various types of maintenance contracts. Their comprehensive “TEAMService Platinum Premier” service plan provides service 24 hours a day. They can also design a customized service/maintenance program to fit individual customer needs. Every TKE office maintains an extensive inventory of spare parts and has access to their national parts distribution system. As per their presentation, TKE can provide quality replacement parts at a moments notice.

4.0 Conclusion

Our members from both the chapters participated in the question/answer session and enjoyed the discussion with TKE personnel.
