8:30 am – 5:00 pmWriting Workshop: Gender, Professions PCC, Street Level

and Organizations110AB

Sponsored by: American Sociological Association

Description

A loosely organized group of ASA members who come together the day before ASA begins and the day before SWS winter meetings begin, starting in 2011. The day is spent working independently or in small collaborations on research in this area (we recently broadened our focus to include organizations in addition to scientific research and academic in focus). Each meeting includes new and returning colleagues, from advanced graduate students to senior scholars. Writing is peer mentored rather than led by individuals with special expertise. New collaborations born in these workshops have led to publications in peer reviewed journals and in edited collections.

Sexual Misconduct in Sociology: Franklin Hall 9

Everyone Can Be Part of the Solution,

ASA Event, Co-sponsored by SWS

Description:While some of us have become targets of sexual misconduct, many more of us become witnesses of incidents in various professional settings including academic conferences that are not always easy to interpret. Furthermore, we are often at a loss of what we can or should do about these. This workshop is directed at undergraduate and graduate students, researchers, and professors alike.
Sharyn J. Potter, Professor of Sociology and Executive Director of the Prevention Innovations Research Center at the University of New Hampshire will provide an overview of the problem of sexual and relationship violence, stalking and harassment in academia. We will use case studies including scenarios at academic conferences to teach attendees how to identify problematic situations. Dr. Potter will facilitate interactive exercises to teach participants how to intervene as engaged bystanders before, during and after instances of sexual and relationship violence, stalking and harassment.
Proposed Session Objectives:

* Participants will be able to identify a continuum of inappropriate sexual behavior.
* Participants will develop empathy for those who have experienced sexual and relationship violence, stalking and harassment.
* Participants will understand the concept of bystander intervention.
* Participants will understand their role in bystander intervention and make a commitment to intervene in cases of sexual and relationship violence, stalking and harassment before, during and after an incident.
* Participants will apply the concept of bystander responsibility to sexual and relationship violence, stalking and harassment.
