BACKGROUND
Havenhurst is a residential resource centre, jointly funded by Pembrokeshire County Council and Hywel Dda NHS Local Health Board. Havenhurst offers a broad range of services to older people suffering, or who have suffered mental health distress. The Home offers assessment, respite, and rehabilitation with a view to clients returning to their own homes.

JOB PURPOSE

You will attend, under the general supervision of the manager/senior care to the personal needs of clients as laid down in the Code of Practice, Care Council for Wales. As part of the Havenhurst Team, you will assess the needs of clients and report/record them. Your duties will include physical and emotional care, aimed at creating a supportive, homely, atmosphere where clients can achieve maximum independence. In addition you will maintain a high standard of hygiene and cleanliness within the home. We operate a shift system, which includes night duties, on a rotating basis.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Physical1.  Washing, bathing, dressing, feeding, toileting of clients. Managing of client’s incontinence. Washing clients’ personal clothing and bedding, drying and ironing of same. Sluicing of foul linen. Sorting of clothing and ensuring it reaches correct client.
2.  As part of the team, assessment of clients’ daily living skills with a view to them being rehabilitated to their own homes.
3.  Basic First Aid simple dressings only.
4.  Care of teeth/dentures, washing and setting of hair, clients’ shopping and escort duties.
5.  Observation of clients’ well-being, reporting of same in individual care plans.
6.  Moving and handling of clients in accordance with training, correct use of mechanical aids and appliances, taking into account Health and Safety Regulations.
7.  Administering of clients’ prepared medication as directed.
8.  Preparation of simple written reports.
9.  Domestic duties and any other duties directed by the manager.
10.  Be prepared to assist with supervision/ training of new staff as directed by the manager.
Psychological, emotional and spiritual1.  Sitting with and comforting very ill and dying clients and supporting family/friends.
2.  Reasoning and managing confusion, observation and reporting/recording of behaviour patterns.
3.  Stimulation of interests in daily living, for example, some occupational therapy.
4.  Management of aggression.
Upgrading
Be prepared to take senior care role in the absence of the person in charge. These duties to include general administration, meeting visitors, relatives and other agencies. Responsibility for the security of the building and safety of clients. Ability to act responsibly in emergencies. Keep records and client care plans up to date.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

1.  NVQ 2 in social care or prepared to work towards the qualifiication.
2.  Articulate and able to communicate with people at all levels with good written English language skills.
3.  Previous experience working with older people within a care environment and specifically those associated with psychiatry of old age, would be an advantage.
4.  Understanding and respect for older people with disabilities.
5.  Ideally, knowledge of correct moving and handling procedures and correct use of mechanical aids and appliances to comply with Health and Safety Regulations.
6.  Must be flexible and have confidence to operate on own initiative but also be able to work as part of a team.
7.  Prepared to undertake appropriate training.
8.  Ideally, a knowledge of the Welsh language.
