Peak District Challenge Volunteering Factsheet
Thanks for your interest in volunteering to help at the Peak District Challenge, taking place from 9pm on Friday 22 September 2017 until 9pm on Saturday 23 September 2017.
There are lots of roles available:
●Baking snacks and treats in advance of the event.
●Preparing food and hand it out at checkpoints or in our headquarters in Hathersage
●Deliver equipment around the course and pick-up any retirees in your car
●Odd jobs, like taking photos or video and sweeping the floor.
In return you’ll get:
●A competitors goody bag
●Heartfelt thanks
●And you will be supporting a really great cause, without having to break too much of a sweat!
Operating a checkpoint is one of the more popular roles. All checkpoints are accessible by vehicle, so access to a car (or friend with car!) is a big advantage. The role involves bringing supplies (like water, flapjacks and sandwiches) out into the Peak District, and handing them out to trekkers as they go through.
Checkpoints are organised in to shifts of between 3-4 hours, so camping chairs and outdoor clothing are a good idea. Many checkpointers come back year-on-year and make their checkpoint their own, with home-baked treats to hand out, comfortable chairs and a friendly welcome for returning participants.
We will provide food and drink for the entrants, and whilst many volunteers bring along extra home-made things for the trekkers to enjoy, that isn’t essential.
Checkpoints run throughout the night, and we are always especially grateful to volunteers agreeing to take overnight shifts.
Catering Roles involve helping cook a delicious stew supper for participants when they arrive back in HQ after their trek. Experienced caterers would be ideal for this role.
Helping in HQ involves registering participants, organising a raffle, general tidying and helping with the domestics
Drivers with their own vehicle are helpful for ferrying supplies around the course, and picking up trekkers who drop out to bring them back to HQ.
Specialist skills are also welcomed, from first aid and videography, to social media publicity and spreadsheet / admin help.
The event runs overnight, and whilst we have roles available throughout the whole event, we are always especially grateful for help through the small hours. Camping (sleeping on the floor of a village hall) accommodation can be offered to volunteers before or after their 2am start or their 3am finish.
A car is not essential, but helpful. A campervan would be the ideal checkpoint-operating vehicle!
