PXCSF Spring Meeting Notes 3/14/2017
PXCSF Mission Statement
The Pocatello Cross Country Ski Foundation is a non-profit organization committed to promoting and improving Nordic skiing for all levels of experience in Pocatello. We believe that a quality ski experience for novice and expert skiers depends on well maintained trails with excellent grooming. PXCSF assists the City of Pocatello operate Mink Creek Nordic Area with volunteer labor and equipment for trail maintenance and grooming. PXCSF also promotes local skiing through events such as the Potato Cup race, Fun Race Series and fall Trail Runs with volunteer work days. We also support both masters and junior ski programs based on interest.

Grooming Coordinator: Dave Roy
PXCSF volunteers groomed around 150 hours on 75 days.
Volunteer Groomers: Dave Roy, Kevin Marsh, Bill Skerjenc, Mike Krumberger, Phil Leavitt, Randy Anderson andTroy Neu. Alternates were Sam Magnifico, Bob Marcinko and Joel Rardin.
City Update: Lance Clark
Winter 16/17 was unusual at the Nordic center. Everyone is aware of the unusual amount of snow, but in February we also had a long thaw and an icy stretch.
I haven’t pulled final numbers yet, but preliminary data suggests business was just average. We sold and distributed a normal number of season passes and weekend revenue was nothing unusual. I suspect the deep snow allowed people to ski in town more often, to ski alpine more often and generally find other winter alternatives closer to home.
Mechanical issues are an ever present thing at the Nordic center. Belts burn up, the cat breaks down and vehicles are used hard. The parts for the cat arrived this week, a little too late to help.
To help continue to justify the Nordic center we are launching a new race on the Nordic trails September 30. It will be a 10k mountain obstacle race. Revenue from registrations has already surpassed season pass revenue from skiers.
Planned changes for 17/18-
· There will be more structure for work days. It is very hard to track everyone and make sure things are effective use of time when people just show up any time during a 3 month span. We will have 3 volunteer Saturdays and will not do makeup days, solo projects or “combine hours” from multiple people for a pass.
· We will consider a change to the snow bike policy, despite several years of zero conflict.
· We will consider moving to a more rigid grooming schedule for more distant trails so users know what is groomed and when.
June 24th, 2017Pebble Creek Mountain RunTroy Neu
Race starts at 3PM. $20 pre-register, $30 after.
Registration is open and can be found here:
This is the same day as the Wildfowers Festival and it seems Pebble Creek really likes having us there.
As for volunteers, I’m hoping that Roger and Patricia will be willing to take care of bib pick up and registration and timing. If I can get 4 more people to help with aid stations and timing, that would be great.
2017Trail Run Series
The fall runs haven’t been scheduled yet, anticipate the same days as work days.
For the fall runs we need two timers, two for registration, two to direct traffic and someone to sweep.
Volunteer:_Debbie Newhouse and Roger Schmidt will help with registration and timing. Dave Roy, Troy and Randy will help set up course. Still need 2 course workers and two sweepers.
Potato Cup Update
Participation was somewhat low but conditions were perfect and everything went off smoothly.
Wednesday Night Fun Race Series
We again heldall 6 scheduled Fun Racesas scheduled this year plus 2 for bonus. Live music added to last two. Randy will remain as organizer next year. We’re going to drop the Race from the name next year.
Dryland Training
Bill Woodhouse will again organize in mid-September and possible move to Wednesday evenings. 4-10 average attendance last year. Well appreicated, thanks Bill!
Facebook and POKYXC Website
We discussed dropping the website but decided to keep it. Extremely helpful for grooming updates and other info. We’re looking for a Webpage designer to save some $$, if you’re interested or have any leads to someone that is please contact Valerie.
Valerie Gill continues to maintain the PXCSF Facebook page.
