BACKGROUND

ThePEand sport premium is designed to help primary schools improve the quality of thePEand sport activities they offer their pupils. The Government is spending over £450 million on this funding over the 3 academic years 2013 to 2014, 2014 to 2015 and 2015 to 2016.

Schools receive PE and sport premium funding based on the number of pupils in years 1 to 6. Schools with 17 or more eligible pupils receive £8,000 and an additional payment of £5 per pupil.

Schools must spend the funding to improve the quality of thePEand sport activities they offer their pupils, but they are free to choose the best of way using of the money.

RIDGEWAY ACADEMY

Ridgeway received £9,445 during the academic year 2015-16 for its PE & Sports Grant. The funding has been spent in a variety of ways:

  • Ridgeway continued to employ a PE Apprentice through to the completion of her Level 3 qualification.
  • External experts have come into school to provide specialist cricket and hockey coaching to children and to support staff development.
  • Ridgeway has purchased new equipment to reinvigorate the teaching of current sports in school – rugby, cricket, badminton,netball, football, table tennis, basketball.
  • Ridgeway has purchased equipment to introduce new sports to the curriculum including volleyball and orienteering.
  • Training of current staff with the RFU has been completed
  • Competition entry – various teams and individuals have been entered into competitions for golf, football, cricket.
  • Transportation to and from competitions to allow access to the events to the maximum number of children possible.
  • Supporting the School Sport Partnership in Redditch through the release of a staff member for one afternoon per week.
  • Maintaining and upgrading gym equipment and the school field for athletics and football.
  • Purchase of equipment to support the teaching of PE leadership and teamwork

THE IMPACT OF THE PE & SPORTS PREMIUM AT RIDGEWAY

  • Children have participated in a Rugby tour to Ireland having been inspired through the enhanced teaching of Rugby following staff training.
  • All children have access to high level cricket equipment during summer term.
  • Increased extra-curricular provision for various sports across the school year.
  • Increased performance levels in
  • Increased participation in indoor cricket through the investment in Worcestershire Cricket Coaching
  • Increased number representing the school in county athletics - investment in modern athletics equipment plays a part in this
  • General revamp of equipment helps inspire pupils and provide sustainable resources across the school
  • Pupil progress in PE is consistently above national averages (measured through teacher assessment)

Our school teams are proving highly successful across numerous sporting disciplines:

  • Year 6 boys football team have emulated the girls’ success and reached the final of the county cup
  • The cross country teams from all years competed inthe district cross country event, the results were as follows:
  • Year 5 Girls – 1st
  • Year 5 Boys – 3rd
  • Year 6 Girls – 3rd
  • Year 6 Boys – 2nd
  • The Year 6 girls crowned county champions for indoor cricket
  • The Year 6 basketball team were crowneddistrict champions
  • The year 6 tag rugby team have been crowneddistrict champions
  • Year 6 Girls Rounders team won the district tournament
  • Year 6 boys finished 2nd in the Hereford & Worcester County Football final

Success with our older year groups demonstrates the legacy of the PE funding and the impact it has had on our pupils since receiving it during their time in KS2, their achievements include:

  • Year 8 girls football team became district footballchampions for the 4th year running
  • Year 8 girls football team crowned county champions
  • The Year 8 boys cricket team havecompleted an amazing quadruple by winningthe Redditch district competition for the 4thyear running.
  • Year 8 boys and girls both finished 2nd in the indoor athletics district competition
  • Year 8 boys cricket team were crowned county cricket indoor champions
  • Cross Country Team district event results:
  • Year 7 Girls – 2nd
  • Year 7 Boys – 3rd
  • Year 8 Girls – 2nd
  • Year 8 Boys – 2nd
  • Year 7 girls finished 2nd place in the district Rounders event
  • Year 7 girls came third overall in the School Games Netball Competition
  • Year 7 & 8 champions at tag rugby
  • Year 8 boys table tennis team have beencrowned district champions.
  • The year 8 girls’ badminton team have performedincredibly and have achieved a great honour bybecoming district champions in the YEAR 9 districtcompetition.

ACADEMIC YEAR 2016-17

Ridgeway should receive around £9,000 for PE & Sports in the next academic year. The plans for these funds include:

  • Investigating the potential to increase internal sports teaching and learning space for the school.
  • Remarking of the Hall to incorporate more sports.
  • Purchase of more equipment to widen the number of sports available to our children as part of the curriculum.
  • Continued support to the School Sport Partnership in Redditch through the release on a staff member for one afternoon per week.
  • Competition entry – various teams and individuals will continue to be entered into competitions for golf, football, cricket and the entrance of a Rugby team at County level.
