INFORMATION NOTE

ON EXPATRIATE EMPLOYMENT WITH MINISTRY OF EDUCATION

  1. Contract offered is for duration of two (2) years and is renewable subject to meeting established criteria for renewal. Renewal of up to four contracts may be considered.
  1. The offer is conditional on obtaining a clear medical fitness certificate.
  1. Original documents of the following test must be sent to the Ministry of Education as these documents must be cleared by the Ministry of Health in Seychelles before taken up employment with the Ministry.

  1. Candidates whose family will join him/her in Seychelles must provide copy of the following documents.

  1. Engagement in fee-paying private tuition is strongly discouraged.
  1. Free medical services are available. Candidate who wishes to attend private clinic will be at their own expenses.
  1. The School year is from January to December for Primary, Secondary Schools and Post- Secondary Institutions.
  1. Secondary Schools have three school terms in the school year.
  1. Post-Secondary Institutions have two Semesters.
  1. Teachers/ Lecturers are encouraged to take leave during the school holidays in order not to disrupt the classes.
  1. End of Contract Leave – Candidates are paid 42 days end contract leave. Should the candidate wish to take leave during his/her contract, this may be granted and the number if days taken as leave will be considered as leave without pay.
  1. Accommodation will be provided. Single persons or married couples without family, will be allocated a flat or bedsitter. In some circumstances, single person may share accommodation (a two-bedroom or a three bedroom house). Under normal circumstances, married couples may be provided with a two bedroom house.
  1. Candidates have to bring or purchase their own cutlery, bed linen and towel.
  1. When the candidate moves into permanent accommodation, he/she is responsible for electricity connection fees of US $ 58.00 & water connection fee of US $ 8.00 and also the monthly charges. In addition, a deposit is also payable but this is normally refunded upon vacating the accommodation unit.
  1. Candidates are advised to bring enough money to cover their expenses before the first salary is paid at the end of the month.
  1. Given that the schools are scattered on the main island (Mahe) and two other islands (Praslin & La Digue), candidates may be appointed to serve the first contract on any of these three islands.
  1. Education is free throughout the state Primary and Secondary school system. Parents have to contribute towards uniforms.
  1. Expatriate students attending Post-Secondary Institutions have to pay fees of around US $ 755 per semester or US $ 9060.00 per year.
  1. All income is subject to 15 % tax deduction as per the Laws of Seychelles.
  1. There is a good bus service from 5.30 am by day until 7.00 pm. The bus fare is SR 5.00(US $ 0.42) from Victoria to any part of the island. There is also night bus service for the Northern and Southern regions from Monday to Saturday at 08.00 p.m.
  1. A free air ticket is provided for the candidate and his/her family to Seychelles. Candidate and spouse will also benefit from 25 kgs excess baggage each over and above that is allowed free on the air ticket. Children are not entitled to excess baggage.
  1. Upon completion of contract, candidate will be provided with return ticket plus excess baggage to your home country.
  1. Air ticket for candidate become due onlyat the end of contract which means that should your dependent wish to travel to your country before the end of the contract, the candidate has to meet the cost which will be refunded at the end of your contract. Before any refund is made, the candidate has to provide/submit original receipt.
  1. On leaving the country upon completion of your contract, candidate are entitle to spend up to two (2) nights in a guest house prior to your departure covered by the Ministry.
  1. Any expenses incurred prior of taking up employment with the Ministry of Education will be at the candidate’s expenses and will not be refunded by the Ministry of Education.
  1. Please note that all financial transactions made in Seychelles is undertaken in Seychelles Rupees.

Other Relevant Information

1)Basic Salary

Takes into consideration – Qualification and experience as per the Teachers Scheme of Service and the salary table.

2)Summary of Selection Criteria

2.1 Qualification (not lower that first Degree or its equivalent)

2.2 Experience: 3 years’ teaching experience

2.3 Age (Candidates aged 55 or older may not be considered)

2.4 Health – Medically certified fit to work.

2.5 Language – should be fluent in English as English is the medium of instruction at Secondary and beyond.

2.6 Family Size – Preference will be given to single candidates or candidate with small families (less than four and under 18 years).

2.7 Flexibility – Candidates must be able to accept placement on the basis of the school system’s needs.

3)Incentives

3.1 Allowances in Addition to Monthly Salary

a)Annual Inducement Allowance paid on Monthly basis.

b)Displacement Allowance paid monthly for candidates posted on Islands other than Mahe (Praslin and La Digue)

c)Annual Supplementation Allowance paid in monthly installments. Upon completion of each contract, an increase of 10 % is awarded. (The increase is calculated based on the basic salary plus the supplementation earned during the last contract up to four contracts)

4)USED ITEMS

a)Wearing apparel, personal effects and instrument and tools for personal and professional use.

b)Household Effects: carpets, crockery, cutlery, refrigeration, deep freezers, cooker, washing machine, dryer, rice cooker, toaster, electric fan(s), hair dryer, sewing machine, clothing, kitchen utensils, furniture, glassware, linen, pictures, ornaments.

c)Binoculars, cameras, gramophones and records, sports requisites (not exceeding SR 3,000 in total value), tape recorders and magnetic tape, one television set and one video cassette recorder and typewriters/laptops shall also be included in the baggage.

5)List of used items which trade tax would have to be paid

Motor vehicles, bicycles, carriages, music instrument.

In case more than the exempted quantity is imported, tax shall be payable on amount by which allowance is exceeded.

6)Full meals and accommodation

On first arrival in the country, you will be entitles to full meals and accommodation in terms of a guest house until you will be required to leave the guest house. You will be liable to contribute towards the cost of your board and lodgings:

-Unaccompanied person / SR 100 per night
-Additional contribution if accompanied by spouse / SR 50 per night
-Additional contribution if accompanied by spouse / SR 75 per night
-Additional contribution if accompanied by spouse / SR 150 per night

All extras e.g. drinks, extra meals, telephone calls, laundry etc. are your responsibility. You will be required to stay in the guest house where accommodation has been booked and should not change without prior permission. Failure to comply with the above will result in you being required to meet your guest house expenses in full.
