PE planning: ball control

Learning intentions: show increasing control over an object in pushing, patting, throwing, catching or kicking it.

Lesson 1
Show increasing ball control- rolling / Gather the children to sit in a large circle and roll the ball to one another, say the person’s name as you roll the ball. / Now put the children into pairs. Get them to carefully roll the ball to one another. Now number the pairs 1 and 2. Child number 1 stands on one side while child number 2 stands opposite them on the other side. Encourage them to roll the ball to their partner. Extend by getting them to stand further away from one another. / Give each child a ball. Pretend to stick imaginary glue on your hand and explain that they must slowly pat the ball around the space. The ball must stay on the palm of their hand. This is a great way to increase their concentration and ball control. / Can they listen and respond to instructions?

Lesson 2
Show increasing ball control- bouncing / Give each child a ball. Pretend to stick imaginary glue on your hand and explain that they must slowly pat the ball around the space. The ball must stay on the palm of their hand. This is a great way to increase their concentration and ball control. / Each child to have a ball. Demonstrate how to bounce the ball on the spot. Encourage children not to bounce the ball too hard otherwise it will be hard to catch. Can they bounce and catch the ball on the spot?
Extend- carefully walk around the space whilst gently bouncing and catching the ball. Can they change the hand in which they are bouncing the ball? / Now put the children into pairs. Explain that they must bounce the ball to one another. Remind the children how to bounce the ball carefully and to their partner. / Can they listen and respond to instructions?

Lesson 3
Show increasing ball control- bouncing and catching / Warm up bouncing the ball in and out of the space. Can they bounce the ball a little harder? Can they change the hand they are using to control the ball? / Put the children into pairs. Demonstrate how to bounce the ball to their partner. Can their partner catch the ball and bounce it back? Remind the children to aim the ball in the middle of where they are standing. Do we need to bounce the ball hard? Or soft? Allow the children to bounce the ball to one another. / Share good practice. Highlight the teamwork and ball control. / Can they listen and respond to instructions?

Lesson 4
Show increasing ball control- throwing and catching / Gather the children to sit in a circle. Pretend the ball is a hot potato. Can they gently throw the ball around the circle as quickly as they can saying ‘hot potato’ / Demonstrate how to throw the ball gently in the air and catch with both hands. Allow the children to have a go at throwing and catching the ball independently. Can they move while throwing and catching the ball? Can they change which hand they catch the ball? / Gather the children back into the circle and stand in the middle. The teacher to call out a name and throw the ball to that person. Are they ready to catch the ball? Increase the speed to develop reflexes. / Can they listen and respond to instructions?

Lesson 5
Show increasing ball control- throwing and catching / Gather the children to sit in a circle. Pretend the ball is a hot potato. Can they gently throw the ball around the circle as quickly as they can saying ‘hot potato’ / Put the children into pairs. Explain that they are going to throw ad catch the ball to one another. Demonstrate how to throw and catch the ball. Allow the pars to explore with the ball. Extend by making them stand further apart. / Gather the children back into the circle and stand in the middle. The teacher to call out a name and throw the ball to that person. Are they ready to catch the ball? Increase the speed to develop reflexes. / Can they listen and respond to instructions?

Lesson 6
Show increasing ball control- kicking / Gather the children into a circle and stand in the middle. The teacher to call out a name and throw the ball to that person. Are they ready to catch the ball? Increase the speed to develop reflexes. / Explain that we are going to show ball control using our feet. Can we gently pass the ball to each other using our feet? Demonstrate how to kick the ball using the side of our feet. Now place cones around the space. Can they gently dribble the ball in and out of the space? Encourage the children to keep the ball close to their feet. / Set up a small goal using the cones. Teacher to go in goal, allow the children to have a go at kicking the ball into the goal. Are they able to aim the ball into the goal? / Can they listen and respond to instructions?
