Description of the materials

The materials used will be interactive. The Units that work with the written skills (reading, writing) use mainly pdf files or online activities related to vocabulary. There are also nautical glossaries to check all the specific vocabulary, but one of the main tasks will be the GLOSSARY, that you will have to build on your own.

On the other hand, when the Unit works with the oral skills (listening and speaking) the material is mostly audio files or videos, which you will be able to use or download to use in class (therefore, you MUST bring your own headphones in the classroom).

Overall introduction

After this Unit, you should be able to:

  • understand survival rules and instructions
  • use and understand the Standard Maritime Phrases of the IMO (only the part related to safety and security onboard and passengers care)
  • understand survival manuals and give information related to them
  • communicate and give instructions to the crew and passengers in case of emergency on board
  • give technical instructions to the crew, passengers or professionals (only the part related to safety and security onboard)

Methodology

In order to get all the main aims, you will work on some different skills during eight sessions of two hours each one, and you will work on different stages: individually, in pairs or in small groups. All the activities and tasks will be related to emergency situations.

The AF will be divided into five units and you will have to do many different activities and a task to deliver. At the end of the units, there will be a written and oral test.

The classes will be completely in English and you will be asked to communicate in English.
