PBI Implementation Awards for Apprentice Teachers

One of the goals of UTeach is to promote innovative teaching practices in classrooms. To further this goal, UTeach has developed the PBI Implementation Awards for Apprentice Teachers as a way to incentivize the use of progressive teaching methods and acknowledge the outstanding work of our newest teachers. All apprentice teachers using PBI in the classroom are encouraged to apply for this award.

Award Details

  1. $2000 total will be split between project awardees and mentors (for collaborative projects). This award will be split among deserving proposals based on project scores as determined by the award rubric (next page)
  2. Collaborative projects will be given preference – partner could be a cooperating teacher, another teacher, industry professional, parent, university faculty (outside of UTeach), administrator, a non-profit partner. Interested apprentice teachers who cannot find partners should consult with Apprentice Teaching instructors.
  3. Preference will be given to implementations in schools/classrooms where PBI has not been implemented before.
  4. Project must have been implemented within the Apprentice Teaching semester.
  5. The award rubric outlines the required submission components
  6. UTeach has the right the post any/all submission materials
  7. Awardees are eligible to present at the annual UTeach conference, with registration covered by UTeach.
  8. Awardees will be honored at the Apprentice Teaching Recognition dinner.
  9. A team of UTeach faculty, master teachers, graduates, and cooperating teachers will judge applications, using the AT Implementation rubric
  10. Deadline for applications is ONE WEEK before the AT Recognition Dinner.
  11. Projects must include a completed coversheet

PBI Implementation Awards for Apprentice Teachers - Award Rubric

Criterion / Project Criteria / Score / Rationale/Evidence
Originality / The project is entirely the original work of the person/team submitting the project. The project is innovative and creative, appealing and relevant in its use of context.
Implementation / At least one version of the project has been implemented during the semester for which the project is submitted. Representative student work is included and revisions for future implementations of the project are noted.
Documentation / A lesson plan that thoroughly documents the project is included. The lesson plan includes teacher notes, rationale, all student and ancillary materials. The lesson plan includes enough detail for another educator to easily implement
Context / The project contains a driving question or challenge situated in a well-described context and presented in anchoring experience. This anchoring experience drives all activities and is directly related to final product.
Collaborative inquiry using authentic resources / The project submission provides evidence of extended, collaborative inquiry using authentic tools/resources leading to a tangible product. The project provides substantial opportunities for reflection and revision.
Content / Project content is accurate, rigorous, and clearly connected to important concepts and skills in the subject area.
Reflection/ Self Assessment / The submission includes and analysis of implementation outcomes with suggested revisions. The submission also includes a self -assessment of the project using the award rubric.
