PATHOGEN INFECTION STORY BOARD

PART I

The body’s first line of defense consists of different types of barriers that keep most pathogens out of the body. Pathogens are disease-causing agents, such as bacteria and viruses. These and other types of pathogens are described in the figure below. Types of pathogens that commonly cause human diseases include bacteria, viruses, fungi, and protozoa.

QUESTIONS

1. What is a pathogen?

2. According to the chart above, what is a virus? How is it different from the other pathogens?

3. a) Which type of pathogen causes the common cold?

b) Which type causes athlete’s foot?

c) What causes malaria?

d) What causes strep throat?

4. Please go to pages 966 to 967. Explain why a vaccine works.

5. Define zoonosis. Look on page 474 of your book.

PART II

Your disease ______

1. Pathogen (bacteria, virus, protozoan, fungus, etc):

2. Symptoms (What would happen to you if you got it?)

3. Incubation period (How long does it take before we see symptoms?):

4. How is it transmitted (blood, food, water, air, sexually)?

5. Is zoonotic (disease that can be spread from animals to humans)?

6. If zoonotic, what are the vectors (organisms that carry it to humans), if any?

7. How contagious is it? How likely are you to get it?

8. Treatment? Is it curable?

9. Are there any vaccines?

10. What is the best way to prevent infection on your disease?

11. What region of the world is it found?

12. Shade in the map below (with a colored pencil) where it is found. IMPORTANT: Label the countries and/or regions in the map.

PART III--Brainstorm Outline of Your Story

Rough Draft Directions: Include a description and brief sketch.

Box 1- Introduce character
Boxes 2-3: How does your character get infected
Box 4-5: What symptoms will your character have?
Boxes 6-9: How will your patient be treated?

PART IV: Final Draft

Use the above information to create a storyboard as to how someone could be infected and treated with the pathogen assigned to you. Make sure to include a drawing and description in EACH box.
