Passport Project

This project is designed to help you become more familiar with world geography, become comfortable using atlases, almanacs, and other research tools, and gain knowledge about various countries of the world.

The Passport Project replaces the traditional sixth grade country report. When you research a single country, you become knowledgeable about only that country. With this project, you will learn several facts about at least twenty countries!

You will be given passport pages to complete – one half-sheet per country. Here is a sample:

VISA

COUNTRY VISITED ______

CAPITAL CITY ______

POPULATION ______

LANGUAGE SPOKEN ______

FLAG

SIZE OF COUNTRY ______

LOCATION ______

MONETARY UNIT ______

Each student needs to bring an almanac to school each day during this project. World almanacs can be purchased for less than $10.00 at bookstores (Borders, Barns and Noble, etc.) or membership stores (Costco, Sam’s), and of course, they are free at a public library. For the “Reasons to Visit” section, travel guides, the Internet, magazines and library resources will be crucial. Again, bring these resources to school with you. I’ll be checking for them on ______. Don’t forget that all resources in the classroom and in the school library are available to you!

Requirements:

  • Neat cursive or printing
  • Flags need to be drawn neatly and accurately (using rulers) and colored. Be careful – if you use pens, make sure they don’t bleed through the paper.
  • “Reasons to Visit” needs to be in complete sentences, and you need to have acceptable reasons such as the examples on the sheet that you will be given.
  • Spelling, cap., punct., and grammar count.
  • Your passport must include twenty countries.
  • You’ll need to use a minimum of three countries from each of the five major continents. Australia is also required. Disregard Antarctica.
  • Do not cut the pages in half! They will be bound together as they are. We’ll do this in class together on the due date.
  • Each passport entry is worth 5 points, for a total of 100 points.

We’ll do several drafts together that you may use in your final. Do rough drafts on all of your pages first to avoid errors and many messy eraser marks. I’ll be checking your drafts and progress daily as we work on these in class.

We will complete the passport project one country at a time. You can expect to do one rough draft and/or a final draft daily. As always, please seek assistance if need it.
