How to Apply / Participants should submit the application form and their speeches by e-mail to the Speech Contest Committee.

Criteria for Participation /
- Participants must be of non-Japanese parentage and residing in Ireland more than sixmonths at the time of application.
- Participants must not be members or an immediate family member of the JLTI.
- Past winners may not enter the same category.
Contest Group Classifications
(1) Beginner / Lower Intermediate Level Group
Participants must have had less than 300 hours* of Japanese language study and have lived in Japan no longer than 3 months.
(2) Intermediate / Advanced Level Group
Participants will have had over 300 hours* of Japanese language study and have lived in Japan for under 5 years.
*Hours of self- study is not included in the "Hours of Study". Applicants need to write their course names and year on the application form. If applicant is receiving private tuition, he/she has to put their teacher's name and contact details.
*Ex-JETS need to tick the box on the application form.
(3) Secondary School Students: LC2
Participants must be studying Japanese as a second language in the final year of the Leaving Certificate in Ireland, and have studied no more than 2 weeks in Japan.
There will be questions from the judges in Japanese.
(4) Secondary School Students: TY & LC1
Participants must be studying Japanese as a second language in either the transition year, or the first year of the Leaving Certificate in Ireland, and have studied no more than 2 weeks in Japan.
There will be no questions from the judges.
Rules / Beginner / Lower Intermediate Level & Intermediate / Advanced Level
Theme of the speech: "Japan and I"
Duration of speech: 5 - 6 minutes
The title of the speech must be written in the application form.
Questions in Japanese from the judges will follow the speech.
Secondary School Students
Theme of the speech: for LC2, "My Dream" or "My Friend/s" or "My Hobbies";
for TY and LC1, "Self introduction".
Duration of speech: 1 - 2 minutes.
Judging /
- Judging will be carried out by a judging panel selected by the JLTI Speech Contest Committee.
- Each judge will mark the speech out of 40. Marks will be awarded for content, presentation, grammar and answers to judges' questions. The score for each participant will comprise the aggregate score of the whole judging panel.
- Points will be deducted if the speech is longer or shorter than the allotted time.
- While notes are allowed, participants will be deducted points for reading their scripts.
- Participants should not use PowerPoint, OHP, handouts and any property during the speech.
Prizes /
- The winners from the two groups (Beginners / Lower Intermediate; Intermediate / Advanced groups) will each receive a return ticket to Japan.
- The winners of the two Secondary School Students groups will each receive a special prize.
- Runners-up will receive various prizes, and there will be prizes for all participants.
Notes /
- For Beginner / Lower Intermediate Level and Intermediate / Advanced Level, an applicant’s speech must be attached to e-mail as word document (or text file). Scanned handwritten scripts will also be accepted.
- For Secondary School Students groups, teachers should submit an application form on behalf of their student. The contestants will be decided by a draw by the Committee.
