Dear Parents,
The Holloways Beach Environmental Education Centre’s Boating Program has been running now for over ten years. One of our goals is to give visiting students the opportunity to experience the uniqueness of an estuarine river system and all its associated animals and plants.
Such activities could include close inspection and identification of mangrove animals and mangrove plants, fishing, crabbing and water quality testing, map reading, tides and moon phases, bird identification and crocodile spotting.
The area in which the program could be conducted, will depend on the activities agreed to by the teachers and the conditions at the time of the intended activity.
Louise Carver (Principal of HBEEC), Steve Thomas (Boating Officer), Peter Cox, Tim Trehearn, John Woolcock & Alan Franzmann (HBEEC Teachers) all have Restricted Coxswains Certificates. These operators therefore meet the Department of Education requirements and are permitted to use the waterways from the mouth of Richters Creek to Thomatis Creek into the Barron River and back to Richters Creek along the foreshore (ONLY IF CONDITIONS ARE CALM). Normally the area they operate in is from the mouth of Richters Creek to Thomatis Creek and into the Barron River, returning the same way back to the local boat ramp.
All students are required to wear a PFD 2 Life Jacket.
The Holloways Beach Environmental Centre will be using three boats and motors:
- 4.4 Clark “Magnum” Aluminium V Nosed Punts with full canopies.
- Two boats are surveyed for ten persons and one for eleven persons.
- Boats are powered by 55hp or 60hp outboards.
The operators have extensive dinghy experience and local knowledge of the creek and surrounding beach area - they will be the only people to operate the boats.
The P&C and Principal have approved this activity. ALL children participating will be instructed in safety, general rules, emergency procedures and our expectations of them.
If you wish your child to be involved in such a program you MUST complete the appropriate section on the Parent Consent and Medication Form.
