High School Guidance Counselor

Arts Academy in the Woods will hire a High School Guidance Counselor for employment beginning in February of 2016.AAW is a fine and performing arts public, charter high school serving students from Macomb, Wayne and Oakland counties. Our students complete the Michigan Merit Curriculum while majoring in one or more art areas: dance, vocal music, instrumental music, multimedia art, 2D and 3D visual art, creative writing, and acting. We are a small, close-knit community, and we serve a diverse group of 325 - 375 students and 25-35 teachers. Our community prides itself on its diversity; 60% of our students are white, 35% are African American, 33% are economically disadvantaged, 33% of our students are male. We have a small but significant LGBT student community.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must have Bachelor’s Degree in School Counseling. Master’s preferred.
  • Must have a Michigan Teaching Certification with a School Counselor endorsement
  • Experience in individual, group and family counseling with adolescents.
  • Counseling experience must be in an educational setting
  • Must possess excellent organization, planning, professionalism, and time management skills
  • Must be computer literate and proficient in the use of Microsoft Office software
  • Must possess excellent verbal and written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Experience working in culturally diverse setting
  • Ability to work independently and within a team environment

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with distance learning and other credit recovery options.
  • Advanced coursework in counseling and administration.
  • Experience as a 9-12 teacher.
  • Experience in a customer service environment.
  • Experience with Local, State, and Federals laws and mandated reporting.
  • Experience in a charter school environment preferred.

Required Responsibilities:

  • Deliver guidance curriculum supporting student development.
  • Provides individual and group counseling regarding personal, peer or family problems to (9-12) students referred for help
  • Analyze student data and develop data driven programs for intervention action plans.
  • Provide responsive services to individuals or groups on academic and personal issues.
  • Provide an individual planning system to guide students toward postsecondary goals.
  • Provide system support to strengthen the efforts of teachers, staff, and parents.
  • Support standardized testing program; parent education; staff development.
  • Adviseshigh school students on college majors, admission requirements,entrance exams, and financial aid and on trade or technical schools and apprenticeship programs.
  • Provides behavioral management consultation and planning, including classroom observation, monitoring and follow-up.
  • Consults with school social worker to provide activities designed to improve andsupport the emotional, behavioral and social skills development ofstudents.
  • Providessupport and consultation to school staff as needed, participating as amember of the school At Risk Team & to students who havespecial needs and require additional and unique services.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Principal.

Work Year: August 1 through June 30

Compensation: Commensurate with education and experience.

  • Salary: Commensurate with education and experience, per the Arts Academy in the Woods Master Agreement.
  • Benefit package available, including health, medical and MPSERS retirement per the Arts Academy in the Woods Teacher Master Contract
  • Position would be within the American Federation of Teachers, Michigan Alliance of Charter Teachers and Staff, Arts Academy in the Woods Federation of Teachers, AFT Michigan, AFL-CIO.
