Part-time Lecturer- Machine Shop Practice

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of British Columbia invites applications for a part-time position assisting the Shop Practice and Student Project Lecturer in providing student instruction and flexible operating hours for the teaching shop facility during the months of January and February 2011.

Typical duties will includesupervising students accessing the machine shop class; providing instruction and guidance in good practices typically used in vocational machine shop settings;providing design and manufacturing instruction, feedback, and advice to students and teams working on design projects; training students in the safe set up and use of equipment; maintaining a safe working environment according to WorkSafe BC requirements, university safety policies, and shop safety rules.

The successful candidate should hold a Technology Teacher Education diploma from a recognized institution. He/she will have sound experience in teaching machine shop practice, interest in teaching undergraduate and graduate students, and sound knowledge of workplace health and safety. Candidates with a degree in mechanical engineering will be given preference.

Additional desired skills and qualifications:

  • Mechanical Engineer (P.Eng,) with machine shop experience
  • Thorough knowledge of machine shop prototyping skills for manually operated milling machines, lathes, drill presses, saws and other equipment as is typically used in a prototype shop setting.
  • Thorough knowledge of safety issues involved in shop operation and a familiarity with WorkSafe BC regulations
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively verbally in a machine shop environment
  • Experience with press brake forming of sheet metal is an asset
  • Teaching and supervisory experience is an asset
  • Experience with CNC, welding and waterjet cutting is an asset
