PART-TIME CAMPUS SECURITY OFFICER

SALARY: $15.00 per hour, paid twice monthly per time and leave reporting (TLR) on the 10th and 25th of each month.
SCHEDULE: Position is expected to work two night shifts during the week, and/or weekends (maximum of 69 hours per calendar month). Schedule will be determined according to the needs of the department.

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

This position is responsible to promote lawful behavior and protect the welfare of students, faculty and staff as a visible presence on campus. Campus Security Officers report directly to the Director of Campus Safety & Security. Although non-commissioned and unarmed, Campus Security Officers perform foot and vehicle patrols of the campus to monitor behavior, secure buildings and property, investigate disturbances, maintain order during events and enforce regulations. Campus Security Officers monitor the physical security of campus buildings by locking and unlocking doors, using surveillance systems and reporting suspicious behavior.

In emergency situations, Campus Security Officers respond to the scene, provide first aid and alert additional police or emergency personnel as appropriate. Campus Security Officers maintain radio communication with other safety personnel and officers on campus, helping to coordinate emergency plans. Campus Security Officers complete and submit incident reports to supervisors or law enforcement agencies as appropriate. Other duties include monitoring alarm systems and responding to alerts, training additional Campus Security Officers or other employees with security responsibilities and serving as crowd control at special events.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED, TO THE FOLLOWING:

  • Ensures a safe and secure environment through the basic tenets of visible presence and vigilance.
  • Performs foot and/or vehicle patrols of interior and exterior areas of assigned locations.
  • Reports crime and suspicious activities and persons to law enforcement.
  • Completes Patrol Activity Log (PAL) at the end of every shift and submits them to the Director of Campus Safety & Security. Maintains a record of the reports.
  • Refers offenders to the Vice President of Instruction/Student Services for review under the College’s discipline process or to the appropriate law enforcement agency depending upon the nature and severity of the offense.
  • Responds to situations involving theft, accidents, disturbances, fire or natural disasters.
  • Responds to automatic burglar and fire alarms on campus.
  • When requested, escorts faculty, staff, students and visitors to vehicles or other campus buildings.
  • Screens individuals in accordance with published processes to expedite or bar their admittance to the campus or a facility.
  • Checks,reports and resolves/corrects unsafe conditions, hazards, unlocked doors, security violations, and unauthorized persons on campus.
  • Monitors vehicles and bicycles in parking areas to prevent theft or vandalism.
  • Establishes and maintains positive working relationships with students, faculty, staff and campus visitors. Ensures that behavior inspires confidence in the Campus Safety & Security Department.
  • Enforces standards of behavior on campus grounds and in buildings. Immediately reports disturbances, suspicious circumstances or activity to appropriate college personnel and law enforcement or fire officials as needed.
  • Represents the College at professional and community events as needed. Participates in related professional conferences and in-service activities.
  • Maintains an appropriate attitude and demeanor consistent with the College’s Mission, Vision and Values.
  • Maintains patrol vehicle and assigned or issued equipment.
  • Performsall other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School diploma or GED.
  • 1+ years’ experience in a security officer role.
  • Demonstrated experience in the use of a personal computer, including the Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, Publisher), and Adobe Acrobat-formatted fillable forms.
  • Demonstrated experience interacting with individuals from various ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds as well as across the age continuum.
  • Demonstrated experience working in a team setting.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Valid Washington State driver’s license and current automobile insurance coverage (both must be maintained throughout employment).“Complete Record”Department of LicensingAbstract of Driving Record (ADR) with no record of disqualifying violations.
  • Valid American Heart Association certification in First Aid, CPR and AED (or obtain within 60 days of hire, paid by BBCC).
  • Successful candidate must submit to and pass a criminal background investigation with no evidence of disqualifying crimes, convictions, or involvement in criminal or immoral activity.
  • Successful candidate must submit to and pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug screening.
  • Completion of National Incident Management System—Incident Command System courses for ICS-100, ICS-200, and ICS-700 (or complete within 60 days of hire; no cost online training).

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 3+ years’ experience in a security or law enforcement related position.
  • Critical thinking skills: seeks resources for direction when necessary. Performs independent problem solving. Decision making is safe, logical and deliberate.
  • Actions demonstrate accountability. Performs work within legal and ethical guidelines.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and cooperatively in a diverse environment.
  • Previous training and/or experience with compliance activities for the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act.
  • Previous training and/or experience with Federal Title IX compliance activities.
  • Bilingual fluency, especially in Spanish.
  • Demonstrated multicultural experience.
  • Completion of the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission’s School Safety Officer Academy.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Physical stamina is required as this position is constantly on the move and must be able to get quickly from one place to another.
  • Strength is required to effectively use physical restraint, if needed.
  • Ability to spend long hours on patrol or at a monitor station.
  • Physical ability to climb stairs and walk long distances.
  • Ability to communicate using verbal and/or written skills for accurate exchange of information with visitors, students, staff, faculty and the public.
