Teaching
Opening
(10-15 min) / Explore using Instagrok, PENGUINS / Read and discuss vocabulary. Discuss setting, genre.
Takes place in 1938, in a little town called Stillwater. / Discuss how the hero in the video inferred the robbers would go to jail.
Work-Time Activities
(45-55 min) / Make a poplet, inserting penguin picture as center. Use as DG / Read Chapt. 1, 2, 3, 4
Complete chap ques / Read Chapt. 5, 6, 7
Stop after reading 1st paragraph in Chapt 5. Predict what they think the trouble may be with the serviceman and the license.
After reading Chapters 5/6 ask students to infer as to why they think Mr. Popper was having so much trouble with the serviceman and the government.

Closure Activity (20-30 min) / Complete top two “ice cream scoops” from graphic organizer.
