Thefirsteditionofthistextbook,called OPEN GENETICS,wasproducedinJanuary,2009asinstructionalmaterialforstudentsinBiology207attheUniversityofAlberta,andisreleasedtothepublicfornoncommercialuseundertheCreativeCommonsLicense(Seebelow).Usersareencouragedtomakemodificationsandimprovementstothebook.Allthetextintheoriginal2009editionwaswrittenbyMichaelDeyholos,Ph.D.Insubsequenteditions(2010-2014),additionalchapterswerewrittenbyMikeHarrington,Ph.D.,attheUniversityofAlberta.AdditionalcontentandeditingbyJohnLocke,Ph.D.andMarkWolansky,M.Sc.,attheUniversityofAlberta.Photosandsomediagramswereobtainedfromvarious, non-copyrightedsources,includingFlickr,Wikipedia,PublicLibraryofScience,andWikimediaCommons. OGLisanalternativeapproachtoanopensourcetextbook.MuchofitscontentisderivedfromtheOGtextbook.The13chaptersinOGwerecutupanddistributedinto41shorterchaptersthatparallelthecurrentlecturetopicsinBIOL207(MolecularGeneticsandHeredity)attheUniversityofAlberta.Moretextcontent,figures,andchapter-endquestionswereaddedinthisrevision.
ThisreorganizationofOGcontentintoOGLwasaccomplishedduringthesummerof2015byJohnLocke,MikeHarrington,LindsayCanham,andMinKuKang.LindsayCanhamwassupportedbyagrantfromtheAlbertaOpenEducationInitiative(OEI)throughtheUniversityofAlberta.MinKuKangwassupportedbyaSummerStudentScholarshipfromtheCentreforTeachingandLearning(CTL),UniversityofAlberta.Withoutthesesourcesoffinancialaidthisprojectwouldnothavebeenpossible.JohnLockeandMichaelHarringtonappreciatetheirhelp,aswellasthatofMichaelDeyholos,whoinitiatedthisendeavor.
