Part II: Internet Activity

Before you do internet research, examine Chinese history in your textbook for Unit 3. You will compare and contrast with images from the internet activity and analyze them for continuity and change over time.

Step 1: Visit to the Song Dynasty in China (960-1279) Columbia University website:

Step 2: See the entire Beijing Qingming Scroll by clicking on its image box that reads “The Starting Point”

You can see the entire scroll by moving the bar below it. Was the order you arranged your images correct?

Now place the three scenes from the Kaifeng (the Northern Song capital) in the correct order.

Step 3: Check your answers regarding the various activities on your city scenes by going to the image titled

“The Bridge scene”,then “explore scene”. Repeat with the other scenes.

You can also explore in great detail at:

Step 4:From the same box explained in Step 2, read more about the Beijing Qingming Scroll.
Describe & discuss something you learned reading:

Step 5: Review and discuss the following about cities:

Cities / Urbanization

What does “urban” mean? ______“Urbanization”? ______

Cities serve a variety of functions (purposes, or reasons for existing). Brainstorm and list some of those reasons in the space below:

Song Dynasty China – Continued

Cities / Urbanization

Discuss a comparison/contrast of your list with the following.

Cities serve a variety of functions, including:

  • Retail / Trade
  • Manufacturing
  • Education (technical or religious training, university, monastery, etc.)
  • Religious center or sacred site
  • Administration (local, regional, or national political capital)
  • Transportation hub
  • Military (barracks, training centers, etc)
  • Scientific research
  • Tourism and/or recreation
  • Services for tourist, traders, merchants and other travelers
  • Cultural center (theaters, music venues, art galleries, etc)
  • Financial center (Money lending, tax collection, banking, insurance, stock exchange, etc)
  • Medical and/or hospital
  • Retirement center

The more types of functions a city has, the larger it tends to be. By the end of the Song Dynasty, Kaifeng was probably close to a million people in population, while Paris (France) and London (England) were smaller than San Leandro with only 30,000-80,000 people.

Step 6: Navigate and explore the Song Dynasty website, considering and discussing the following questions:

Kaifeng:

  1. What were the different functions of Kaifeng? What evidence do you find to support those ideas?

Population:

1.Population line graph: What was the approximate population of the Song Dynasty at the beginning and end of the dynasty? By what percent did population increase during the dynasty?

2.What evidence indicates reasons why population increased so dramatically? Look for evidence of disease control and public health. What other factors may have led to population increase?

3.Why do you think population decreased so dramatically during the Yuan/Mongol Dynasty?

Social:

  1. What different socio-economic classes seem to exist in Kaifeng?
  2. What groups of people seem to have more status and prestige? Evidence?

Cultural:

  1. What evidence is there of religion or religious activity?
  2. Why are there no Buddhist pagodas in the Kaifeng scroll?
  3. What seems to be common forms of entertainment? Does entertainment seem to vary by different socio-economic classes?
  4. What evidence is there of long distance interactions with other cultures?
  5. What important role did Hangchow (Southern Song capital) play in long distance interactions with other cultures?
  6. Was the Song Dynasty sophisticated and advanced enough to be considered the world’s first “modern” culture? Why or why not?

Technology:

  1. What were important technological breakthroughs or inventions of the Song Dynasty? What socio-economic class (merchants, peasants, etc.) or institution (government, military, etc.) did each of those inventions probably affected, and why?

Step 7: On the website, under “Technology”, read and explore the many details within the following subheadings:

-Rice Cultivation

-Printing & Movable Type

-Shipbuilding & the Compass

-Gunpowder

-Scientific Experimentation

Using specific evidence from the website and/or your textbook, develop this blueprint which could be used to write continuity and change over time essay about technology in China.
