The goal of this assignment is to begin to recognize physical features and locations in order to build background knowledge for areas that we will discuss throughout this school year.
Part I: Map Work (100pts)
Physical and Political Maps
You will create a series of maps, please follow all of the directions as you work through this guide. Map #1 will ONLY be Physical Features. (The World Map)
Locate the following on the map provided; you will label each country, body of water, city and region listed below. You are also required to mark and label the capitals of all of these countries listed below.
You will have a quiz worth 40pts on the first day of class that will require you to label/identify places on a map, and answer vocabulary questions associated with a map. Your quiz will only be based on Map #1/vocabulary, the others are for more general knowledge and building a foundation moving forward.

Part II: Map Vocabulary/Flash Cards (30pts)
Define the following terms in 2-3 sentences each (minimum). These definitions should be in your own words and should be prepared both on the attached form, and as 3x5 index cards completed as show in the example below.
Using the word in a sentence should demonstrate mastery of that word, underline the word where you have used it in a sentence. Map / Definition: A representation of an area that can show either features, cities, roads, political areas, or all of the above.Use in a sentence or provide an example:
Maps can be used for any number of things such as road trips, sea voyages, or studying the political landscape of a country you are not familiar with.
Compass Rose / Definition: A circle that shows the principal directions printed on a map or chart. A compass rose primarily depicts North as Up on a printed map.

Index Card Directions: You will create an index card for each of the vocabulary words above. Create this on a 3x5 card or some other form of thicker cardstock, regular white printer paper rips and bends too easily to be used over a long period of time.
You may add colors/pictures on your index cards if you wish, however it is not required.
These vocabulary words will be included on your quiz on the second day of class.
