Pond Nets / Staff, public / Minor – serious injury / Pre activity demonstration to everone on how to use the nets safely. Hold net handle and stand with 2 feet firmly on the platform. Dip into water, then while watching who is around you, bring the net out and empty it into the tray. Lay down the net on the ground when not in use. Children asked to watch for people around them, and not to misbehave with the nets. Maximum 5 children per platform, preferably 3-4. / Moderate
Pond dipping – working near to water / Staff, public / Drowning, death / Children asked to not step over the ledge on the pond dipping platforms. Smaller children advised to kneel down on the platforms to help balance. Watch out for windy conditions as this will affect nets and balance. / Moderate
Water bourne diseases – weil’s disease / Staff, public / Risk of disease / Pre activity warning to children and adults they they should not put their hand in their mouth or eat or drink once they have touched the pond water. Advised to wash hands with warm soapy water in the café or at sedum house. Staff to have some hand gel at the ready as an interim solution. / Slight
Extreme weather conditions / Staff, public / Hypothermia / Staff to check weather forecast night before or when relevant and decide what action to be taken if weather is goven out ice, snow, heavy rain, flooding, high winds. If it is very cold, visitors should wear correct clothing. Can make platforms slippery and unsafe near water. Pond dipping area is very exposed and can get very hot and sunny. Advise children to wear hats and bring sun lotion. / Slight
Exhaustion / public / Collapse. / Staff to make sure the walk is set at a regular pace. A back marker should be there to make sure non of the group are getting too far behind but they are there to help. Take regular stops e.g. in hides and cafe / Trivial

Conflict within group, and between group and other site users. / Children, adults, staff / Aggressive behaviour, fighting / Leader to monitor any potential conflict building through the event. Try to diffuse any aggressive behaviour. Seek help if behaviour becomes extreme and take rest of the group to a safe area. Teachers are responsible throughout the activity for the behaviour of their students. / Slight
Child and vulnerable adult protection issues / Children and vulnerable adults / Protection issues / All children and vulnerable adults are to be accompanied by an adult carer/teacher. The adult should take responsibility for the child’s general safety throughout the task and accompany the child if they leave the group (ie to go to the toilet, to get a drink of water).
