To Kill A Mockingbird

Creative Writing or Artistic Piece

For this part of the Final Evaluation, you are to select either a creative writing option OR an artistic piece option. All options assume knowledge of events from Part One of the novel only.

Creative Writing Options:

1. Take on a different identity. Imagine that you are a character in the story. Choose two critical moments in the character’s life and write two diary entries that he or she might have written in response to his or her experiences. Describe thoughts and feelings about what has been happening around you, the circumstances of your life, your feelings about yourself and your neighbours and other people in the community.

2. A letter exchange between two characters (write one letter by each character) in which they express their thoughts to each other about some event or circumstance in the story. Disagreement can make a letter exchange like this fun and interesting. Make sure you write in character. Use words and phrases that each character would use. Express opinions that your characters would be likely to have.

3. Tell some part of Part One from the perspective of a character other than Scout. Feel free to fill in the details the author left out.

4. Write in a passage/scene which the author left out, but which you wish had been included. Try to write in the author’s style and indicate where in the novel your scene would fit.

5. Retell some part of the story in the form of a poem, a song lyric, or a rap.

6. Write a play script version of a scene/passage from Part One. Be sure to include stage directions as well as dialogue.
