Prepare a Lesson informed by CTS (KIM #2)

This assignment is practice in incorporating research on student learning and student misconceptions into your lesson planning. This assignment will lead you through choosing a topic associated with the content covered in the Intel Math Program and using CTS as a way to guide the development of your lesson planning. This assignment is meant to provide practice with CTS materials and the application of content covered as part of the Intel Math program. As part of this assignment you are required to choose a content/topic addressed in Intel Mathematics in Units 1 – 6 and adapt it for use in your classroom. Although it would be best to choose a topic that is relevant to your instruction, you will not necessarily be required to actually implement this assignment or lesson plan. This assignment can be completed individually or in pairs, depending on the grade level make up of your MLC.

Steps in lesson planning: / Teacher Reflections/Work
1. Identify a concept for a lesson. Choose a mathematical concept covered in Intel Math, one that is grade level appropriate and with which your students often struggle. Describe why you chose the concept you did. Describe the unit/problem set that this concept is associated with and describe how directly/indirectly related your chosen concept is to the content as it was introduced and applied as part of Intel Math.
2. Using the Curriculum Topic Study list of topics (p. xiii and ix), choose a topic that aligns with your choice of lesson. In the resources referenced by the study guide under Section I, investigate the adult content knowledge associated with your topic choice. Summarize your topic choice & adult content knowledge findings here.
3. Examine Research on Student Learning: In the resources referenced by the study guide under Section IV, read what the research says about student misconceptions. Summarize your research findings here.
4. Concept focus for this lesson (teaching goal). Describe the concept(s) you will be teaching in this lesson. Think about how the information from adult content knowledge and research on student learning (parts 2 & 3 above) would inform your teaching goals. Refer, also, to the CCSS for Math for your grade level.
5. Lesson Summary

CCSC for Math:What Common Core State Standards for Mathematics does this lesson address?
Intel Math Content Addressed: How does this lesson relate to content learned as part of the Intel Math Program?
Summary of Lesson Activities (summarize what the teacher and/or students will be doing; provide enough detail so that anyone reading this lesson plan can follow and implement this lesson based solely on the description provided)
