Chromosome Diagram
-Find the location of the gene that causes this disorder and map it on a chromosome. This is a very specific location.
-Chromosomal disorders should have a full karyotype instead of just one chromosome.

Self-Explanatory / Pictures of Disease
- Find pictures of individuals that have the disorder or pictures that have a symptom of your disorder. Explain each symptom being shown in the picture. If it doesn’t affect the person’s physical appearance, find pictures of organs/parts of body that are affected / Write a letter to a parent. This would be a basic summary of the disease that someone who knows nothing would need to know.

Points – 10 points for each ‘slide’ = 80 points

Rubric – Each Slide is worth 10 points. A+ = 10, A = 9, B = 8, C+ = 7, C = 6,

D = 4 -5 F = 0 - 3

A+/A – Thorough research was completed. Information is correct, well-written, and organized neatly.
B/C+ – More information could have been found, but the information present is correct.
C/D – Very few facts were obtained to explain the basics of the disorder
F – No handed in. / A+/A – Listing of symptoms is present with a thorough description of what the symptoms mean, when appropriate. (In layman’s terminology)
B/C+ – List of symptoms is present, but many symptoms would be difficult for a 10th grade student to understand.
C/D– List of symptoms is missing some major symptoms. (key to this disorder) / A+/A – Diagnosis is thoroughly explained, leaving no questions about the technique. Diagrams/Pictures are present, when appropriate.
B/C+- Diagnosis is present, but is difficult to understand. Many sentences seem to be taken from source.
D/F – Blatant plagiarism.
A+/A/B – Chromosome Diagram/ Karyotype is present and is accurate. Name of gene that causes disorder is stated and the location on the chromosome is clearly labeled.
C – Chromosome picture is present, but does not have any label or gene name/location present.
F – Karyotype / Gene Location is wrong. / Points cannot be gained, but may be subtracted if you cannot follow the simple instructions given. / A+/A – Treatment clearly states that there is no cure for the disorder, but the symptoms can be treated. (Unless your disorder does have research that shows they have procedures to fix the DNA.)
B/C+ – Unclear description of the treatment, most likely caused by not finding the details of the treatment.
C/D/F – Treatment seems to be written right from a website.
A+/A/B – Stats are present (source is immediately given)
C – Stats are given without a source
F – No Stats
*Graphs may be used to show stats. / A+/A/B– Pictures are accurate and are informative. Captions are included which point out the specific symptoms that are visible.
C/D – Pictures are present but have no explanation what they are showing. / A+/A/B – Letter is written as a nice summary of the disorder. No typos, grammatical errors, or mechanical errors are present.
C – Not a very thorough description, parents might have various questions about the disorder
D – Information was clearly not added that a parent of a child with this disorder would want to know.
