*Parris tells us Abby and Mercy fled on a boat with 31 stolen pounds.
* We learn of riots in Andover. Parris believes riots may ensue in Salem if a “good” name doesn’t confess.
*Hathorne says people are pleased with executions & Parris says it is b/c they were low status people being killed. Once “good” people are killed, there will be a riot.
* Parris wants the executions postponed. Danforth says no. Parris says there was a dagger that fell from his door this morning and he fears for his life(reason he wants someone to confess- so he doesn’t get killed)
*Hale comes in and tells that prisoners will not confess.
* Danforth says 12 people have already hanged, so the others must hang in order for it to be fair.
*Danforth wants E to talk to JP and change his mind- make him confess.
*Hale believes a riot is coming.
*E comes in and says she is only 3 months pregnant (she believes she was summoned there to be killed). Danforth tells her he doesn’t want her life. Hale says she should talk JP into confessing.
*E doesn’t show emotion when they speak of her husband’s death, and so Danforth doesn’t want her to talk to JP b/c she is with the devil. She asks him to let her.
* JP comes in and emotions are strong between E and JP. They are left alone and JP asks about the child and the boys. E tells him 100+ have confessed and Giles was pressed to death. JP tells her he might confess and asks her opinion of it. E says it is his choice but she wants him alive. JP believes he is already a bad person, so one more lie won’t hurt. He asks for E’s forgiveness, but she tells him it isn’t hers to give. She blames herself for the affair (she didn’t think she deserved him so she didn’t show her love as much as she could have)
* JP tells Hathorne he will confess. He doesn’t want it written, but it is. He says he works for devil and has never seen anyone with the devil-won’t spoil their names. Rebecca comes in and is astonished that he confessed. Danforth says he won’t accept a false confession.
*Hale and Parris beg D to accept confession and he does. JP signs it and snatches the signed paper. He doesn’t want it hung on the church door. They have their proof. JP says it is his name and doesn’t want to give it up (boys have to live with name)
*JP tears confession and says he sees some good in himself (he is worthy to hang with Rebecca)
*E cries and JP tells her to be strong. As JP and Nurse walk to their deaths, Parris and Hale beg E to talk him out of it. She says she can’t take his goodness (the fact that he has forgiven himself and finally is at peace) from him.
