PARKS COMMISSION MEETING

At the Town Hall - 4156 County Road B

April 15, 2015

Members present: Commissioners: Don Schmidt, Joe Kolk, Kathleen Murphy-Ende, Tom Shepherd, Kevin Oppermann

Absent: Susan Priebe

Also present: Mary Gross

Announcements: Mary shared some bike information that Ed received at a meeting in March. Carol Swain took a copy of the information and will get back to us.

David Saad contacted Mary about clearing some brush along the Yahara River on Town Property. He lives across the street from the town property. He will need to contact Dane County zoning first. The parks commissioners will view the property and process from there.

Concerning the email from Mike Meitz. Some discussion about cutting some of the lower limbs on the Cottonwood Trees. We will check Kegonsa Manor this spring during our park inspections.

Motion: Schmidt/Shepherd to approve minutes of March 18, 2015. Carried.

I.  New Business

A.  Fall Event. October 19th or 26th.

B.  Bike Brochure. Tabled

C.  Dunn Heritage update. Mary will send a letter thanking the McFarland Fire Department for doing the prairie burn at Dunn Heritage this spring. Don will be working at the park every Saturday from 9 to 12 clearing invasive species until Memorial Day weekend. Mary will announce at the Annual Meeting this Tuesday evening and again at the Arbor Day Celebration. The DNR approved the culvert permit and now we are waiting for the county to approve it. Native plants will eventually be planted along the side of the pond. We will sow the seed late fall after the first snowfall. Some seek will need to be purchased. The sign will be installed as soon as Jay gets the footings in.

D.  Spartan Hills Park update. The only remaining things to be done at the park are spreading the sand and putting timbers around the play area.

E.  Arbor Day Celebration. Saturday April 25, 2015. Jay has purchased 6 fruit trees to give away at the event. Tom will look into getting small evergreens to give to everyone that is attending. Don will bring his grill and Tom will bring the brats, hot dogs, buns, catsup and mustard. Tracey will bring the lemonade and water. Tom will also take care of the award for Ms. Hasbrouck. Our new parks commissioner Kevin Oppermann has volunteered to talk about the nuances of his pastured based farm and how it restores the top soil and earth. Only people present may accept prizes. Only one prize per person. Phyllis Hasbrouck will be present to accept her award presented by Ed Minihan.

F.  Update on Park Grant – See attached memo from Ben.
