Prayer for our Families
God of tender love and mercy,
thank you for the gift and blessing of Christian family life and all families.
We entrust our families to your constant care and protection.
Grant us wisdom to see how we can change our home life,
to become more like that of the Holy Family of Nazareth.
Teach us to listen to each other more attentively
and to be sensitive to each other’s needs.
Show us how to care for each other
and to share our time and all we have, generously.
Give us a spirit of patience and understanding.
Draw us together in deep bonds of friendship,
love and care for one another.
Comfort and strengthen us when we are wearied by trials and sorrows.
May the inspiration of Jesus, Mary and Joseph, be in our homes,
bringing light, warmth, unity, forgiveness and peace.
May we radiate the joy of Christian family life to all who come to our homes.
Bless our hearts and our homes now and always,
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
VENTILATION IN CHURCH
As Summer approaches we are mindful of those who have a low heat tolerance and require good ventilation in the Church. We therefore ask those who sit near the windows to refrain from closing windows during Mass unless absolutely necessary. Rather move closer to the centre aisle of you cannot tolerate the breeze in the church. Let us try to be as considerate and accommodating as possible.
EXAMINATIONS MASS

Commentary
First Reading (Isa 55:6-9)
This short reading appears in the concluding section of Second Isaiah (chapters 40-55), often called “The Book of Comfort”. In inspiring language, it speaks of the coming liberation of Israel, and the glorious fulfilment or God’s promises.
In this passage, the Jewish people are exhorted to seek the Lord who has come near. They can find him who has found them. Even if they can no longer go up to the Temple, God is ever near, even in the midst of suffering and oppression. God is the source of ever-new things in the course of history. ‘The wicked’, those who are lost in despair and forgetful of the divine promise, are called to abandon their drifting way of life, and to go beyond their self-enclosed ways of thinking. It is the time for new beginnings, and for the outpouring of divine mercy: ‘God is rich in forgiving’.
Surrendering the past and future to God’s merciful grace means entering into a mystery that can never be contained by human calculation or control. God is the infinite other, intimately present in every moment. Surrender to the divine will in adoration of God’s providence is the only way forward.
Second Reading (Phil 1:20c-24.27a)
The apostle Paul, writing from his Roman prison, expresses his absolute surrender to Christ. The God who has glorified Christ, will glorify Christ again in the ‘body’ of Paul. Here, ‘body’ means not just a biological entity, but the Apostle’s whole life, and the way he has lived out his calling as an apostle in the service of the Gospel, and in the communities he has evangelized.
Paul’s hope is being expressed in a time of intense uncertainty regarding his earthly fate. For him, condemnation and execution are imminent possibilities. Even here, his magnificent conviction emerges. His whole life is summed up in Christ. Even his death, in conformity with the crucified Lord, would lead to the ‘something more’, a complete union with Christ beyond anything possible in the time and space of this life. For Paul, however, his individual fulfillment is not the governing consideration. He is so confident of his destiny in Christ that he can accept that it may be God’s will for him to remain, in order to continue building up the Church and preaching Christ to the nations. And so, he experiences a ‘dilemma’. Whilst he longs for ultimate union with Christ, he is content to continue on in this life if, in the eyes of God, others still need his presence.
Gospel (Mt 20: 1-16a)
The vineyard was a favourite biblical way of referring to Israel, the people God had chosen for his own. Hence, to labour in the vineyard would suggest a response to a God-given task of serving the chosen people and leading them to the fullness of God’s blessings.
The typical situation here described envisages a crowd of prospective labourers waiting at the crossroads or market place for someone to hire them, especially when the need was greatest at harvest time. The denarius amounted to customary day’s wage, and this was apparently readily agreed to; so they set to work. But at regular intervals, more previously unemployed workers start to arrive. The vineyard owner had sent them along, with the promise of just remuneration. But what would cause grumbling later was that even at the last hour of the day when the work was being wrapped up, a new team arrived, eager to work, even if it was only for a short time. When it was time to pay the promised wages, the bailiff was instructed by the owner to pay the last arrivals first. Surprisingly, they received a full day’s wages. And this raised expectations in those who had done a full day’s work. There was grumbling when everyone was given the same amount. The landowner responded to this complaint by saying, in a friendly fashion, that no one had been treated unjustly; and if he had chosen to be generous, what was the problem? The choice was his, and there was no cause for questioning his generosity.
